Our co-founder Nanna Baldvinsdottir spoke at Reuters Hydrogen last week on the revolution that is happening in the decarbonisation of aviation, and Rethink Energy provided an excellent synopsis of the panel discussions between Nanna, Universal Hydrogen's Pierre Farjounel, and Aerospace Technology Institute's Sophie Lane, moderated by Carol Xiao.

Our co-founder and CEO shared the stage with a stellar panel of eSAF experts at this last week's Aviation Carbon. Nanna extends her warmest thanks to Heida Njola Gudbrandsdottir, Keith Lawless, Aoife O'Leary and Todd Siena for a meaningful discussion, and to Christopher Surgenor and team for their impeccable organisation of this much-needed conference. The key takeaway from this year's conference: increased use of SAF is the swiftest route to the cost-effective decarbonization of aviation.

The Council of the European Union has officially approved ReFuelEU Aviation and the revised Renewable Energy Directive, paving the way for an implementation with the law being effective from January 1, 2024. IDUNN H2's main takeaways: 1️⃣ Fuel suppliers will have to incorporate 2% SAF in 2025, 6% in 2030 and 70% in 2050. From 2030, 1,2% of fuels must also be synthetic fuels, rising to 35% in 2050 RFNBO requirement) 2️⃣ Airlines departing from EU airports to refuel only with necessary fuel for the flight to avoid tankering practices and increased emissions due to extra weight. 3️⃣ Eu airports need to guarantee necessary infrastructure for SAF. 4️⃣ The scope of eligible sustainable aviation fuels and synthetic aviation fuels includes certified biofuels, renewable fuels of non-biological origin (including renewable hydrogen) and recycled carbon aviation fuels. Biofuels made from food and feed crops are not eligible. 5️⃣ This EU law is estimated to reduce CO2 emissions of aviation by more than 60% by 2050, compared to 1990 levels, and will provide additional air quality benefits by reducing non-CO2 emissions. 6. A flexibility period is in place until 2035, where fuel suppliers can average out their SAF supply to EU airports of their choice or choose to satisfy their entire obligation at one airport. #SustainableAviationFuels #ReFuelEU #EuropeanCommission #SAF
