Our mission is to lead technology in air transport: to raise ambition, realise potential and maximise the UK's impact.
About us
The Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) is an independent organisation that works alongside government and industry to transform aerospace through technology and innovation. The ATI is funded equally by the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) and by industrial recipients of project grants. ATI projects are chosen and overseen through close collaboration with Innovate UK and DBT. Our role is to establish a challenging technology strategy for the sector and to develop a portfolio of research and technology activity to realise that strategy, exploiting the sector's strengths and helping UK aerospace to reach its full potential in the global market.

The ATI was pleased to attend the opening of the new Zero Carbon Innovation Centre (ZCIC) at the University of Nottingham. Established in partnership with East Midlands Freeport, Research England and Loughborough University, the centre will deliver innovation in transport technology, green hydrogen production and power solutions for industry, and create jobs for the regional economy. At the centre, partners will benefit from research projects, as well as commercially contracted testing and R&D programmes, collaborate with researchers and have access to incubator labs and office space. Chris Gerada, Professor of Electrical Machines and Lead for Strategic Research and Innovation Initiatives at the University of Nottingham, said: “ATI programmes and infrastructure co-investments have helped us together with other universities to build on and grow the East Midlands region’s strengths in low carbon propulsion and manufacturing. We’re working with the ATI to ensure our regionally based eco-system of research, infrastructure, and skills development is nationally aligned, and enables UK industry to compete globally.” ATI's Head of Programme Delivery, Romina Davoudi BA FCMI CMgr, also shared her thoughts on the opening: “By leveraging years of ATI-supported research, the ZCIC will play a crucial role in fast-tracking sustainable technologies from research to deployment. This will not only strengthen the industry but also contribute to national sustainability goals, reducing emissions sooner and maximizing economic impact." We're looking forward to East Midland's continued acceleration of innovation in aerospace, and seeing the real-world impact delivered through the ZCIC. 🚀 #ZeroCarbon #DestinationZero #Hydrogen

What is the global aviation challenge? Deliver demand at an increasing rate, while reducing emissions. 🛫 This week, ATI’s Chief Technology Officer, Jacqueline Castle joined the Clean Aviation Annual Forum 2025 in Brussels, delivering a thought-provoking keynote on International Cooperation: Driving cross-fertilisation between National Aviation Programmes & Industry. Jacqueline demonstrated how successful partnerships, on a global scale, are delivering the technologies required through innovative solutions, competitive supply chains and world-class infrastructure, with support from programmes such as Clean Aviation and the ATI Programme. Held annually, this year’s forum focus centred on the updated vision for EU aviation and the challenges that arise from developing disruptive technologies to accelerate cleaner technology market readiness and uptake. Fantastic to see industry leaders, top policymakers and academic experts come together to build pathways towards cleaner and more competitive aviation. #CleanAviation #CAAF2025 #Aviation #Aerospace

A vision for the future of composites in UK aerospace. ✈️ Today, we’re launching our first Market Spotlight which shows the UK could grow its market share in aerospace composites by more than six times between now and 2050. To do so will require cohesive strategic action at pace to achieve technology readiness and demonstrate capability across rate, quality and cost. Each new generation of aircraft features a rapidly increasing percentage of composite components, which is forecast to more than double the market value from $16bn in 2022 to $34bn by 2032. The strategic approach shared today will drive UK competitiveness on the back of ATI Programme investment to date of £480m in grant funding, totalling £827m with industrial funding. Want to get involved? Register your interest to attend our Composites in Aerospace workshop, join our upcoming composite-themed events or provide feedback on this paper. The ATI is also inviting subject matter experts and organisations to apply to join a new Composites Working Group which will involve advising on priority areas for investment and helping to finalise the strategy.
