🔥 This new research is lit! 🚒 Timur Naushirvanov has been analyzing evacuation patterns during the #wildfires that occurred in #Valparaiso, Chile, on February 2-3, 2024, using high-definition mobile phone records. In the paper "𝗘𝘃𝗮𝗰𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗼𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀," the researchers investigate the impact of wildfires on different socioeconomic groups in the region. The paper is co-authored by researchers: • Erick Elejalde from the L3S Research Center • Kyriaki Kalimeri (ISI Foundation) • Leo Ferres (ISI Foundation, Universidad del Desarrollo) • Elisa Omodei and Márton Karsai from the Central European University.
🌍 New Research! In our latest paper, "Evacuation Patterns and Socioeconomic Stratification in the Context of Wildfires", we investigate the impact of wildfires on different socioeconomic groups in Valparaíso, Chile. Using high-resolution mobile phone data and comparing it with Facebook Disaster Maps, we find: - People from lower socioeconomic class spent the longest time away from home. - Evacuees reduced their travel distances during the evacuation. - Initially, movements were irregular but later concentrated in areas with similar socioeconomic status. - Mobile phone records show strong comparability with Facebook Disaster Maps. In today’s hyperconnected world, our digital footprints are constantly evolving as we share, post, and debate online. But how do our online conversations shift when major real-world events—such as the NBA Finals or a shocking political development—unfold? To answer this, alongside Anna Mancini, Giulio Cimini, and Riccardo Di Clemente, we analyzed online discussions on Reddit, Inc., a platform where millions engage in real-time conversations, share perspectives, and debate breaking news. While major offline events trigger a surge in online activity, they don’t necessarily foster deeper discussions. Instead, users tend to repeat the same ideas, accelerating the decline of meaningful engagement. This pattern suggests that rather than diversifying discourse, real-world events often amplify redundancy within online communities. Understanding this behavior is crucial for fostering healthier digital spaces, encouraging more dynamic engagement, and ensuring that communities remain places of meaningful exchange.
