WAITING FOR #HERA LAUNCH....STAY CONNECTED We are proud to announce a significant milestone for the international space community: the launch of the HERA satellite, scheduled for today, October 7, 2024, at 16.57 from #CapeCanaveral aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. HERA represents Europe’s contribution to the #NASA/#ESA planetary defense collaboration, aimed at protecting our planet from potential #asteroid impacts. The satellite will head toward the binary asteroid system #Didymos, which was already the focus of a historic mission in 2022. During that mission, NASA successfully executed a kinetic impact on the smaller of the two celestial bodies through the #DART (Double Asteroid Redirection Test) mission. #OHBSystem is Prime Contractor of the mission and OHB Italia S.p.A. is responsible for System Engineering and procurement of the satellite’s power system. Following its launch, HERA will carry out a detailed post-impact analysis using high-resolution visual, laser, and radio instruments to accurately map the surface and internal structure of the asteroid. The collected data will validate, for the first time in history, a repeatable process for planetary defense. OHB Italia S.p.A. @ WORKSHOP "AI nella Space Economy: dalle operazioni in orbita ai servizi per gli end user" 🚀 OHB Italia è stata tra i protagonisti del al Workshop dell’Osservatorio #SpaceEconomy organizzato dal Politecnico di Milano dedicato all'AI in orbita. Durante l'evento Franco Boldrini, Chief BD & Sales Officer, ha condiviso come OHB Italia, nel contesto del progetto #IRIDE, stia ampliando il proprio portfolio con microsatelliti dedicati all’osservazione della Terra. I nostri EAGLET2, con una massa tra i 25 e i 40 kg, sono progettati per #costellazioni numerose, offrendo tempi di rivisita brevi, ideali per anomaly detection ed early warning. La sfida principale? Ridurre la latenza dei dati "utili" per gli end-user. L’intelligenza artificiale rappresenta la chiave per accelerare questo processo, consentendo di elaborare i dati già a bordo dei satelliti. Tuttavia, l'AI richiede processori potenti, attualmente non disponibili per i microsatelliti. Con grande interesse, continuiamo a monitorare l'evoluzione di queste tecnologie, inclusa l’AI per il controllo del volo in formazione, una nuova funzionalità che stiamo implementando. #METIS OBSERVES TURBULENCE PROPAGATION IN SOLAR WIND The #solarwind, a constant stream of charged particles from the Sun, is far from steady: as these particles interact with the Sun’s fluctuating magnetic field, they follow chaotic paths, creating turbulence. Thanks to the ESA's #SolarOrbiter mission and the high-resolution imagery captured by the METIS coronagraph with local measurements at 43.4 million km far from the Sun (less than a third of the Sun–Earth distance), we now have clear confirmation that this #turbulence begins close to the Sun, within its outer atmosphere—the #corona. These findings were made possible through the collaboration between INAF, ASI, and key Italian industry partners like OHB Italia S.p.A. METIS employs broad-band, polarized and narrow-band imaging technology for screening the solar corona: a unique capability combining three different wavelength #bands by means of a single #telescope. It is revealing the mechanisms regulating the #solarwind and its journey across the solar system. This understanding is crucial for predicting space weather and its effects on #Earth. OHB Italia S.p.A. @ ECSSMET 2024 (European Conference On Spacecraft Structures, Materials & Environmental Testing) 🔧 The #MWI instrument, featuring a large rotating component, needs to be perfectly balanced to meet extremely strict standards: this ensures an operational life of over 7 years in orbit and helps reduce microvibrations on the #MetopSG platform. 📅 Last week at #ECSSMET2024, held at ESA-ESTEC, #AlessandroMoroni presented two #papers on these crucial topics. The presentations showcased OHB Italia’s expertise and successful experience in balancing and managing microvibrations during test campaigns on the STM, EM, and PFM models of the MWI instrument. The tests were conducted at the #Airbus EVT facility in Toulouse, under #ESA supervision. 📚 The papers describe key aspects such as applicable requirements, the development of custom dedicated tools, the selection of testing facilities and the final results. They also share valuable insights and lessons learned, contributing to knowledge-sharing within the space community. CIMR MONITORING CHANGES IN THE ARCTIC Exciting progress in Earth Observation! The #CIMR - Copernicus Imaging Microwave Radiometer mission, co-funded by ESA and EU member states with strong support from ASI, is set to play a key role in monitoring #environmentalchanges and addressing #climatechallenges. OHB Italia S.p.A., subcontractor to Thales Alenia Space Italy, is responsible for the development and production of the CIMR instrument for two satellites. This mission focuses on the polar regions, delivering vital data to promote sustainable solutions in the #Arctic. Equipped with a multichannel microwave #radiometer, the satellite measures sea ice, temperature, salinity, and ocean winds. It also gathers valuable insights on snow, vegetation, and soil moisture, enhancing our understanding of global climate dynamics. Stay tuned for further update! Sono particolarmente lieto di accogliere la notizia sul pronunciamento del Tar Sicilia che consentirà ad una iniziativa strategica e di valenza internazionale, supportata da ESA, di essere realizzata sul territorio italiano, in Sicilia. La decisione è il riconoscimento di lavoro di attenzione che in questi anni le istituzioni, European Space Agency - ESA e Agenzia Spaziale Italiana hanno messo a punto per giungere alla progettazione di una infrastruttura che rispetti l’ambiente circostante. Si tratta di un telescopio per la sorveglianza planetaria che nasce da un brevetto italiano e che consentirà al Paese di posizionarsi all'avanguardia a livello mondiale. È riconosciuta l'eccellenza della comunità scientifica italiana, il rispetto della legalità, il supporto continuo dell'esecutivo e in particolare del ministro Adolfo Urso, autorità delegata per lo Spazio, il ruolo di primo piano che l'Italia svolge in ambito spaziale.
