Following the screening of the short film, we will hold a thematic discussion on wildlife poisoning and the activities of Rewilding Apennines aimed at combating this issue, protecting #wildlife for the benefit of nature and people. 🇬🇧 A packed and attentive audience last Friday at the Cantelmo Castle in Pettorano sul Gizio demonstrated a keen interest in a topic that may seem popular at first glance and geographically distant at the same time: the #protection of #polarbears. The very popularity of this animal is one of the paradoxical aspects surrounding it, as it has become a living symbol of our inertia toward climate change, an emblem of a habitat transforming at double the speed of others, and a victim—largely ignored by many—of a petty and exploitative economic model in which species protection is not considered. Indeed, despite this popularity, the polar bear is not a protected species, as emphasized by Giancarlo Gallinoro, the evening’s speaker and the curator of the Italian translation of the photographic book "Polar bear, beloved and betrayed" by Morten Jørgensen. Alongside information on the biology, threats, and the challenging relationship between this species and our own, personal stories related to intersecting paths were shared, complemented by stunning photographs from both the author and Giancarlo, an Arctic guide, environmental educator, and professional photographer. Given the topic, it was natural to involve Bruno D'Amicis as the evening's moderator, with the discussion also focusing on the role of tourism in the challenge of polar bear conservation and the impact of powerful images capable of conveying stories of the species' fragility, which, unfortunately, have not yet led to concrete benefits. Caring for polar bears may seem idealistic, but both Rewilding Apennines and #SalviamolOrso embraced this opportunity for outreach organized within the Bear-Smart Community Genzana, contributing to the development of a shared environmental consciousness. We thank our guests, all participants, the Municipality of Pettorano sul Gizio, the Monte Genzana Alto Gizio Regional Nature Reserve, and Coop Valleluna for their support and hospitality.

🇮🇹 Una sala gremita e attenta lo scorso venerdì nel Castello Cantelmo di Pettorano sul Gizio ha testimoniato l’interesse verso un tema solo apparentemente popolare, qual è la #tutela dell’#orsopolare, e allo stesso tempo lontano geograficamente. È proprio la popolarità uno degli aspetti paradossali che riguarda questo animale, divenuto simbolo vivente della nostra inerzia verso i cambiamenti climatici, emblema di un habitat che si sta trasformando a velocità doppia rispetto agli altri e vittima – ignorata dai più – di un modello economico meschino e sfruttatore in cui la tutela della specie non è contemplata. Ebbene sì, nonostante questa popolarità, l’orso polare non è una specie protetta, come ha sottolineato Giancarlo Gallinoro, relatore della serata e curatore della traduzione italiana del libro fotografico “Orso polare, amato e tradito” di Morten Jørgensen. Ad accompagnare le informazioni sulla biologia, le minacce, il difficile rapporto tra questa specie e la nostra, storie personali legate a sentieri incrociati, c’erano bellissime fotografie dell’autore e di Giancarlo, guida artica, educatore ambientale e fotografo professionista. Su un tema così è stato spontaneo coinvolgere Bruno D'Amicis come moderatore della serata, con il quale la discussione si è soffermata anche sul ruolo del turismo nella sfida della conservazione dell’orso polare e su quello delle immagini potenti in grado di veicolare storie di fragilità della specie che, purtroppo, ad oggi non hanno ancora portato benefici concreti. Occuparsi di orso polare può sembrare velleitario, ma sia Rewilding Apennines sia #SalviamolOrso hanno accolto con impegno questa occasione di divulgazione organizzata nella Comunità a Misura d’Orso Genzana, per contribuire alla costruzione di una #coscienza #ambientale condivisa. 🇮🇹 Buona Giornata Mondiale delle #zoneumide! Un rapporto innovativo, "Taking Animals into Account", pubblicato oggi in occasione della Giornata Mondiale delle Zone Umide, rivela come gli animali selvatici svolgano un ruolo sottovalutato ma vitale nel mantenere le zone umide del mondo funzionali e resilienti. Redatto dalla Global Rewilding Alliance e dieci organizzazioni partner come Rewilding Europe, lo studio presenta prove significative che la reintroduzione e la protezione di specie animali selvatiche chiave potrebbero essere determinanti nella lotta contro il cambiamento climatico, la perdita di biodiversità, il controllo delle specie invasive e le sfide relative alla sicurezza idrica. Le zone umide vengono spesso celebrate per il loro ruolo nella regolazione dei cicli idrici, nella cattura del carbonio e nel supporto della biodiversità. Il rapporto si basa su undici casi studio provenienti da Asia, Europa e America Latina, mostrando successi reali del rewilding nelle zone umide. Inoltre, Rewilding Apennines ha contribuito con l'iniziativa di ripristino del #gamberodifiume autoctono in #appenninocentrale per mantenere la salute dei corsi d'acqua fornendo cibo ad animali come lontre, pesci e uccelli, e mantenendo puliti i corsi d'acqua attraverso il consumo di materia organica in decomposizione. A groundbreaking #report, Taking Animals into Account, released today on World Wetlands Day, reveals how wild animals play an underestimated but vital role in keeping the world’s wetlands functional and resilient. Compiled by the Global Rewilding Alliance and ten partner organisations like Rewilding Europe, the study outlines impactful evidence that reintroducing and protecting key wild animal species could be a game-changer in tackling climate change, biodiversity loss, invasive species control, and water security challenges. Wetlands are often celebrated for their role in regulating water cycles, storing carbon, and supporting biodiversity. The report draws from eleven case studies across Asia, Europe, and Latin America, showing real-world success in rewilding wetlands. Also, Rewilding Apennines contributed with the #whiteclawedcrayfish restoration initiative in the #centralapennines to maintain the health of the streams by providing food for animals like otters, fish, and birds, and keep waterways clean through their consumption of decaying organic matter. 🇮🇹 Da gennaio abbiamo una nuova #rubrica, che vuole diffondere i risultati positivi del #rewilding da altre esperienze in giro per il #mondo. 🌍𝐁𝐮𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐍𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐚 𝐑𝐞𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠! Le tigri oggi occupano 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐚 𝐥’𝟖% 𝐝𝐞𝐥 𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐨 𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐨, avendo perso gran parte del loro habitat a causa delle attività umane e della persecuzione diretta. Ma uno studio della Wildlife Conservation Society porta una buona notizia: in Asia esistono oltre 𝟕𝟎𝟎.𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐤𝐦² di habitat ideale pronto a ospitarle di nuovo. Un esempio concreto arriva dal Pri-Amur, in Russia, dove un progetto durato quasi 10 anni ha riportato le tigri a popolare una regione da cui erano scomparse da oltre 𝟓𝟎 𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢. Questo progetto pilota non è solo una vittoria per il Pri-Amur, ma una fonte d’ispirazione e conoscenza per le tante popolazioni di tigri minacciate di estinzione. However, a study by the Wildlife Conservation Society brings hopeful news: across Asia, there are over 700,000 km² of suitable habitat ready to welcome them back. A remarkable example comes from Pri-Amur, Russia, where a nearly 10-year-long project successfully restored tigers to a region where they had been absent for over 50 years. This pilot project is not only a victory for Pri-Amur but also a source of inspiration and knowledge for many tiger populations threatened with extinction. 🇮🇹 Le #fototrappole che il team di Rewilding Apennines installa nei #CorridoiEcologici non sono solo preziosi strumenti di #monitoraggio: il loro sguardo discreto ci regala anche frammenti autentici di #vitaquotidiana degli animali che abitano questo territorio. 🐺 I #lupi sono tra i protagonisti più frequenti dei nostri filmati. Come noi esseri umani, anche loro sono animali sociali, legati da forti relazioni all’interno del branco. Osservate come si aspettano, si cercano, quasi a fare l’appello prima di proseguire il cammino: un gesto spontaneo che racconta la profondità dei loro legami. Ma non tutti i lupi vivono in gruppo. Alcuni percorrono il loro cammino in solitaria: spesso sono giovani alla ricerca di un nuovo territorio o di un partner, ma anche tra gli adulti c’è chi si trova a vivere senza un branco. 📸 Ogni scatto ci ricorda che condividiamo questi luoghi con creature straordinarie. Certo, la convivenza tra esseri umani e lupi può generare conflitti, ma forse possiamo provare a soffermarci su ciò che ci accomuna, anziché che su ciò che ci divide. Noi di Rewilding Apennines crediamo in una #coesistenza possibile tra uomini e lupi e continueremo a lavorare affinché diventi sempre più armoniosa. --- 🇬🇧 The #cameratraps that Rewilding Apennines team installs in the #ecologicalcorridors are not just valuable tools for #monitoring; their discreet gaze also provides us with authentic glimpses of the #dailylives of the animals that inhabit this territory. 🐺 #wolves are among the most frequent stars of our footage. Like us humans, they are social animals, bound by strong relationships within their pack. Observe how they wait for each other, seek each other out, almost taking attendance before continuing their journey: a spontaneous gesture that reflects the depth of their bonds. However, not all wolves live in groups. Some travel their path alone; often, these are young wolves in search of new territory or a partner, but even among adults, there are those who find themselves living without a pack. 📸 Each shot reminds us that we share these places with extraordinary creatures. Of course, coexistence between humans and wolves can lead to conflicts, but perhaps we can try to focus on what unites us rather than what divides us. We at Rewilding Apennines believe in a possible #coexistence between humans and wolves, and we will continue to work towards making it increasingly harmonious.
