An Organisation created by the farmers for the farmers
Chi siamo
The World Farmers' Organisation (WFO) is an International organisation 'of farmers for farmers.' It aims to bring together all the national producer and farm cooperative organisations with the objective to develop policies that favor and support farmers' causes in developed and emerging countries around the world. WFO is a member-based organisation of agricultural producers, which aims to strengthen farmers' positions within value chains, with a particular focus on smallholder farmers. By advocating on behalf of farmers and representing their interests in international policy forums, WFO supports farmers in better managing extreme price volatility, leveraging market opportunities, and timely access to market information. WFO's work covers all agriculture related thematic areas including forestry, aquaculture and fisheries, environment, trade, extension, research and education. WFO encourages farmers' involvement in sustainable rural development, the protection of the environment and facing other emerging challenges, such as climate change, generational renewal, and gender equality. WFO's mandate is to bring together farmers' organisations and agricultural cooperatives from all over the world, representing the global farmer community: nano, small, medium, and large-scale farmers. The World Farmers' Organisation's mission is to represent and advocate on behalf of farmers in global policy forums and create the conditions for the adoption of policies aimed to improve the economic environment and livelihood of producers, their families, and rural communities. Additional key technical areas of WFO work are: trade, innovation, women, youth, forestry, aquaculture, research, and innovation.

Today I had the honour of speaking on behalf of WFO: World Farmers' Organisation at FAO Food Day on COP 16 in the session on "Empowering farmer and indigenous people as stewards of biodiversity for food and agriculture". I presented the "WFO Policy on the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and natural resources" and shared the message that at COP16, the WFO calls for greater: 1) Recognition of the ecosystem services provided by farmers through sustainably managed agriculture, including through the adoption of regenerative and agroecological approaches; 2) Engagement of farmers as key actors and partners in global biodiversity efforts, with a special attention to the role of women and young farmers; 3) Support to farmers in the implementation of sustainable and locally appropriate agricultural practices enhancing both biodiversity and food security. To reach the goals on biodiversity it is crucial that farmers are part of the process - and this goes for all kinds of farmers. And I must admit, that I got at little surprised when I was asked during the debate, how European farmers received the WFO Policy - it felt a little like it was being implied that European farmers does not care as much for biodiversity as farmers elsewhere. So I was happy to tell about the "Agreement on a Green Denmark", as an example of how engaging and recognising the farmers role can make a real difference. If we are going to at the same time secure food for a growing world population and stop and reverse the loss of biodiversity, all farmers all around the world have a part to play.

I am glad to have been part of the panel discussion the importance of investing in young family farmers at the world food forum. Investing in young farmers is essential for ensuring the sustainability and resilience of global food systems. With the average age of farmers increasing, empowering youth to engage in agriculture brings fresh ideas, energy, and innovations, such as climate-smart practices and digital solutions, that are critical in addressing modern challenges like climate change, food insecurity, and unemployment. Access to financing, training, and land for young farmers can unlock their potential to transform agriculture into a profitable and sustainable venture, driving economic growth and rural development. Supporting youth-led agribusinesses not only secures future food production but also creates employment opportunities, contributing to more inclusive and prosperous communities.
