The fashion industry is often accused of being one of the most polluting, for three main reasons: 1- trends are outdated quickly, pushing unnecessary new purchases that induce consumerism; 2 - fashion products, especially garments, are often composed by a mix of materials, making them difficult to recycle; 3 - “unsold” items become waste without passing through the hands of the consumer. Consumers' increasing awareness and sensitivity makes them pay attention to the origin of clothes, as well as the composition and durability of materials. With the LIFE I’M TAN project, we want to offer a concrete solution to overcome the “buy, use and throw away” approach typical of fast fashion, supporting the industry in producing next-gen materials that are fully sustainable and recyclable. Chi siamo
I’m Tan is an innovative project that aims to deliver a competitive solution to reduce the environmental impact of leather tanning. This goal is made possible through the use of sustainable Chemically Modified Natural Tannins (CMNT) to produce eco-friendly, high-quality leathers suitable for a wide range of common goods: footwear, handbags, garments, car interiors, furniture elements and much more. Currently, over 85% of the leather produced worldwide is tanned using chrome salts, as tanning agents. Chrome presents many advantages: low cost, versatility of use, and high quality of finished products. However, Cr(III) can oxidise into toxic and carcinogenic Cr(VI), both in finished leather and in wastewater. Furthermore, it can generate allergic reactions in particularly sensitive skin. There are alternatives, of course: synthetic tannins and aldehydes, but they impart to finished leathers inferior physical and mechanical characteristics compared to chrome tanned leathers, making them unsuitable for certain applications. Moreover, some health and environmental issues remain, due to the hazardous substances used or released during the making of the leather and its entire life cycle. And what about natural tannins? Although extremely eco-friendly, natural tannins are suitable for a reduced number of applications. And they also have some contraindications: they generate high chemical load in wastewater in terms of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), due to the presence of non-tanning Low Molecular Weight Substances. With CMNT, everything changes. Thanks to an innovative, environmentally friendly process, the I’m Tan project intends to separate these non-tanning substances from tannins and modify them to obtain a “super” tanning agent: ecological as natural chestnut and quebracho tannins, versatile as synthetic substances. And implementable on an industrial scale. Thanks to I’m Tan, leather tanning processes will prevent chemical hazards,

Like a precious stone, vegetable tanned objects never “die”. Thanks to a skilled craftsmanship, true to the ancient Italian tradition, and the use of the fantastic natural elements that are tannins, anything created by this tanning process can pass from generation to generation without being thrown away. Sustainable, waste-free and ageless: what more could you ask for? Maybe, a next-gen tanning process that enhances tradition with the power of Science. With our Life I’m Tan project, we are almost there! Life20 ENV/IT/000759 #lifeprogramme #lifeproject #sustainability #sustainableleather #leather #naturalleather #vegetabletannedleather #tannins

The market value of sustainable fashion will increase by 22 percent between 2024 and 2031. So says the research study Cognitive Market Research in one of its latest reports. In Italy, 74% of consumers declare to be interested in sustainable fashion, with no marked difference between generations. At the same time, fashion's impact in terms of pollution is still underestimated: only 11 percent consider it one of the most polluting sectors. While people's awareness is growing strongly, there is still a lot of awareness and education to be developed towards some closely related issues. With the LIFE I’M TAN project we are aiming to help foster this green progress and make the fashion industry even more sustainable. Boats with sails made from recycled materials, cars with interiors made from discarded elements... The sustainability of materials goes beyond the fashion industry. Opting for green materials must become the norm, and more and more sectors are embracing this green revolution. Vegetable tanned leather with tannins, in particular, stands out as an emblematic example of an ethical and sustainable product: made from a waste and processed with natural elements, it not only extends the life span of your shoes, your sofa or your backpack, but also represents a concrete commitment to a more responsible future. Besides offering superior quality and durability, each piece made from tannin-tanned leather tells a story of craftsmanship and respect for the environment, while maintaining the appeal of a product that evolves and improves with time. The LIFE I'M TAN project is at the forefront of this transformation. Our modified natural tannins not only help decrease environmental impact, they also ensure that each product is made with respect for natural resources and the people who create it. Imagine being able to choose products that not only meet your aesthetic and functional needs, but that are also good for the planet. Sustainable fashion is a necessity, not just a trend. Vegetable tanned leather is one of the most environmentally friendly solutions in the fashion industry. This tanning method uses natural tannins extracted from wood, fruits and nuts, minimising harmful chemicals and reducing environmental impact. The LIFE I’M TAN project aims to enhance this ancient technique by using modified natural tannins that make the whole process faster, more efficient and ecoconscious, while improving the final performance of the leather. Opting for leather made with natural tannins is a conscious decision for the planet and future generations. Life20 ENV/IT/000759 #sustainability #sustainableleather #leather #naturalleather

Water scarcity, fuelled by climate change and pollution, is a global crisis. 🌍 At LIFE I’M TAN, we're committed to change. The goal of our innovative vegetable tanning process is to cut water use by 60% and boost recycling by 30%. 💧 This isn't just about sustainability; it's about responsibility to our planet and future generations. 🌱 The positive impact of our commitment is not only reflected in the environment, but also in the quality of our products. Our leathers, processed using state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly techniques, retain all the characteristics that make traditional vegetable tanned leather so valuable: durability, breathability and a unique charm that evolves over time. Let’s redefine industrial production as a force for good. 🌟 Life20 ENV/IT/000759 #sustainability #sustainableleather #leather #naturalleather

In cities such as Paris and Milan, fashion capitals par excellence, universities are also dressing up in sustainability. In fact, green issues are increasingly being incorporated into the entire study cycle. This trend confirms that the future of fashion is green, and we firmly believe that vegetable tanned leather is (and will be) the undisputed protagonist. Not just because it is a timeless trend, but because it is a concrete step towards a more sustainable world. That's why we created I'm Tan tannins: to give this ancient tradition new possibilities to meet the demands of modern fashion. Vegetable-tanned leather is not only beautiful to look at, but also to live with: it absorbs the traces of our history, giving it a unique 'lived-in' charm that makes it irresistible. Unlike what many people think, no animal is killed for the leather industry. Leather making is actually a process that recovers a by-product of the food industry. Without this process, animal hides would end up in waste, increasing the environmental impact. Making leather with natural tannins is an environmentally friendly solution, transforming a potential waste into a high quality and durable material. Natural tannins are extracted from trees and plants, therefore used as alternatives to harmful chemicals to ensure a cleaner and more environmentally friendly production. Each piece of vegetable-tanned leather tells a story of sustainability and respect for the planet, offering products that are not only beautiful and durable, but also ethical. LIFE I’M TAN wants to strengthen and expand the range of these ethical choices, contributing to a more sustainable future.
