Vaccines are crucial for controlling Mpox. The success of vaccination campaigns hinges on overcoming behavioral and systemic barriers. In this groundwork, we explore the interplay between psychological and systemic factors that jointly determine successful vaccine access and uptake. A systems-informed, people-centered approach can ensure life-saving vaccines reach the most vulnerable populations. Discover how systems-informed behavioral insights can enhance vaccine access here 👉 : https://lnkd.in/d6KTUuD2 #VaccineEquity #BehavioralScience #HealthEquity #Mpox

Engaging communities is essential for effective disease surveillance and prevention. Our latest groundwork highlights how community engagement—built on reciprocity and trust—can greatly improve Mpox management. It also shows how local partnerships and trust-building empower communities to take control of their health by fostering open dialogues with vulnerable groups and promoting equitable access to information and vaccines. Disease outbreaks like Mpox are more than just biological crises—they are behavioral and systemic challenges. In a new literature review by Moh’ M. Alhaji, PhD, Robert Nyaga, PhD and Patrick Forscher we demonstrate how by linking behavioral systems to global management strategies, we can design more effective interventions for this rapidly spreading disease. Applying behavioral insights through interdisciplinary approaches can transform community engagement and drive better global health outcomes. Join us in exploring how behavioral science can shape the future of public health responses. Read more: https://lnkd.in/d6KTUuD2

Apathy towards waste management leaves us with dire environmental, health, economic, and social consequences. In a recent partnership with Unilever, the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), and EY aimed at encouraging recycling behavior in the global south, we identified two key barriers that need to be addressed for different stakeholders to adopt recycling. Read more in this blog post for more: https://lnkd.in/d2WxFtna

Some of the common people from the global south handle waste is through methods such as landfilling, open dumping, and incineration. However, waste management is more than simply getting rid of garbage. In our joint learning session, we considered the 3R’s as the real solution to the waste problem - repurpose, reuse, and recycle. In this blog post, Liza Ayoo explains this further with examples of organizations that are turning waste into treasure: https://lnkd.in/dxNBXeTH

For behavioral science to truly represent the full breadth of the human experience, African researchers must be empowered to "learn to write and learn to speak" in the global research landscape. Their unique insights and approaches are essential to decolonizing the field and moving beyond the Western-centric perspectives that have long dominated. Power imbalances in research collaborations between the Global North and South often result in an agenda that does not align with local priorities, and can even lead to unethical practices that exploit African communities. Elevating African narratives and ensuring they have a seat at the table as full partners is crucial to developing a more inclusive, representative, and impactful behavioral science. Despite the significant obstacles, there is a "sunny future" for behavioral science in Africa, with rapid growth in research output and emerging initiatives to elevate African voices. Between 2012 and 2016, the African region was reported to have the strongest growing scientific production in the world at 38.6%, and the number of authors grew at an astounding rate of 43% over the same period - 10% higher than the next-fastest-growing author population in Asia. Encouraging signs of progress include the Rwandan government's requirement for local authorship on all studies using local data, and programs like the "Remote Student Exchange" that provide online learning opportunities for aspiring African researchers. Exploring the diverse perspectives and unique insights from the African continent can enrich behavioral science and lead to a more holistic understanding of human behavior. Who gets to shape our understanding of human behavior? The Missing Majority Dashboard created by Rémi Thériault and Patrick Forscher shines a light on the gaps in behavioral science research. When African researchers are underrepresented, we miss out on insights that could reshape the field. Track the disparities and see why diversity matters here: https://lnkd.in/d4Zsr3Pr Discover how we can empower the next generation of African researchers and support them to become full partners in the global behavioral science community here: https://lnkd.in/d-WnW2MN #AfricanResearchers #ResearchCapacity #GlobalCollaboration #MissingMajority Winnie Mughogho Jennifer Adhiambo

Behavioral science is essential for understanding human behavior, but it remains incomplete without the perspectives of African researchers. Although Africans account for 17% of the global population, they are significantly underrepresented in the field. Integrating African perspectives is crucial for developing a more accurate and comprehensive view of human behavior. Researchers from the continent often investigate issues highly relevant to local contexts, such as mobile money systems, land use disputes, and the influence of shame as a social motivator. Their contributions provide valuable insights that can enhance the overall depth and applicability of behavioral science.
