Today, JAMES THONJO delivered a powerful keynote focused on building adoptable recommendations to align the LCOY Kenya 2024 Youth Position Statement with Kenya's and the region’s climate agenda. He emphasized the importance of aligning youth efforts with national priorities and regional goals, including the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). James highlighted that during COPs, three key bodies convene to adopt crucial decisions: 1️⃣ COP: The supreme governing body overseeing the implementation of the UNFCCC. 2️⃣ CMP: The Conference of Parties serving the Kyoto Protocol. 3️⃣ CMA: The Conference of Parties under the Paris Agreement. He also noted the interconnectedness of the Rio Conventions and their alignment with UNEA decisions. As youth, we must engage with the annotated agenda to guide our inputs, ensuring they align with global goals on adaptation, temperature, and finance. As youth, let us continue driving climate action and aligning with these priorities to make impactful contributions! #LCOYKE2024 #COP29 #YouthClimatePolicy #JustClimateAction #ClimateFinance

As climate change intensifies, people are increasingly forced to migrate due to rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and environmental degradation. This phenomenon, known as climate mobility, is a growing global issue affecting millions of people. In 2020 alone, climate-related disasters displaced more people than conflict, with 30.7 million individuals uprooted. Projections suggest that by 2050, 216 million people could be forced to move within their own countries due to climate change impacts, particularly in regions like Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Latin America. IOM - UN Migration experts, Ms. Noora Mäkelä and Ms. Betsy Dankenbring, MPH, highlighted the complexities of climate mobility, teaching on key terminologies and statistics. In Northern Kenya, for example, 64% of people in Garissa lack access to irrigation water, and 245,022 individuals were displaced in four counties (Turkana, Garissa, Marsabit, and Isiolo), primarily due to drought. Share your thoughts with us on how youth are playing or can play a role in addressing climate-induced migration! #ClimateMobility #LCOYKE2024 #YouthinClimateAction #KDMECC
