This week, GIZ Kenya had the honor of meeting with His Excellency Governor Simon Kachapin Kitalei, Deputy Governor Robert Komolle, in West Pokot to discuss the progress of the GIZ’s SCIDA III (Strengthening the Capacity of IGAD Towards Drought Resilience in the Horn of Africa) project.   🚜 We also marked the official launch of the newly rehabilitated Kacheliba Livestock Market and Cheposebei Borehole—projects designed to enhance water access and improve market infrastructure. These interventions are vital for building resilience in local pastoralist communities and boosting their livelihoods.   🤝 Our partners, including Action Against Hunger | ACF-USA, have been instrumental in making these projects a reality, and we look forward to continuing our collaborative efforts.

Rural Women Cultivating Good Food for All   On this International Day of Rural Women, we celebrate the often hidden heroes who cultivate good food for all—women like Ann Njeri, transforming rural communities in Kenya through sustainable agriculture. She is a young poultry agripreneur from Bungoma County selling chicks and eggs to the local community, supporting them with good, nutritional food for the past year.   Originally a teacher in Bungoma, Ann ventured into chicken rearing in 2023, driven by her desire to impact her community beyond the classroom. Through GIZ Kenya’s Agri-Jobs 4 Youth’s SME Loop initiative, in partnership with BAYE Africa, she received training on chicken brooding, before setting up her own chicken-selling business. Armed with new skills and confidence, she established a thriving poultry business that has become a lifeline for her community.   “Every month I brood at least 1,000 chicks. Last month alone (September) I brooded 1,800 chicks. I sell to youth groups, schools, and farmers in Bungoma, Busia and Kakamega,” she shares. But her journey doesn’t stop there.   Rural women like Ann are not just business owners—they are community builders, driving local food security initiatives. Ann has created jobs, employing six farm hands and training other farmers in her area. She has also diversified her business, growing African Leafy Vegetables (ALVs) on a 1-acre farm, which are sold to local schools and hotels.   Thanks to initiatives like GIZ Kenya’s SME Loop, rural women are empowered to uplift entire communities through enhanced entrepreneurial competencies, fostering both economic and social growth.   On this special day, we honor Ann Njeri and countless other rural women who are leading the way in transforming local agri-food systems for the better.   #GIZagricultureKE #KilimoNiBiz #AgriJobs4Youth #InternationalDayOfRuralWomen

🌍 On this International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR), we emphasize the importance of empowering youth to take early action in response to climate risks. At SCIDA III, we focus on capacity building for youth in the IGAD region through initiatives like early warning systems and disaster preparedness. By equipping young people with the tools to understand the risks they face, we are helping them become agents of change, driving resilience in their communities. 🌱💪   Empowered youth are key to creating a safer, more resilient future for all.   #DRRday #DisasterRiskReduction #YouthEmpowerment #EarlyWarning #Resilience #SCIDA #IGAD @UNDRR IGAD Secretariat Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH
