Oxfam ’s latest Voices magazine features Golicha from Strategies for Northern Development (SND), sharing how Loss and Damage funding is making a life-changing difference for pastoralist communities in Northern Kenya. As climate change intensifies drought, floods, and resource conflicts, these funds are empowering communities to lead their own recovery through projects in water access, peacebuilding, and sustainable livestock practices. Recently, with the incredible support of Plan International Kenya, we provided dignity kits to 250 school girls in Dukana! This timely initiative ensured that these bright young minds could head into their end-of-term exams feeling confident and prepared, free from the worry of missing school due to menstrual challenges. For so many girls, menstruation can be a barrier to their education, leading to missed days and lost opportunities. These kits are more than just hygiene essentials—they are tools for empowerment, reinforcing that every girl deserves the confidence and dignity to thrive in school and beyond. We are proud to play a role in building a brighter, more inclusive future for girls in our communities. #EmpoweringGirls #DukanaDreams #PlanInternational #EducationForAll #ConfidenceInAction

We were honored to recently host a distinguished delegation from SOS Children's Villages International in Netherlands , SOS Children's Villages in Ethiopia —lead partners of the Dutch Relief Alliance-funded Ethiopia Joint Response (EJR) project—and our co-implementing partners, Terre des Hommes Netherlands in Africa and #Hundee, for a Real-Time Review (RTR) visit in Dubluk, Borena zone, Ethiopia. This visit aimed to provide timely insights into the effectiveness and relevance of our interventions. The RTR presented an invaluable opportunity to strengthen relationships with stakeholders and share our project achievements. Our team, alongside Hundee, highlighted progress against planned milestones, engaging with local committees such as complaint, child protection, and selection groups. Meaningful discussions with community members in Dubluk IDP, Galee, and Higo and with child beneficiaries under the Individual Protection Assistance initiative allowed us to see firsthand the positive changes happening in their lives. Designed not only to assess current practices, this RTR fostered cross-partner learning, captured lessons for future responses, and empowered local teams through direct guidance and hands-on learning. Together, we’re continuously refining our strategies to ensure our work with vulnerable communities in Ethiopia remains impactful, relevant, and resilient-focused for a brighter future. #ethiopiajointresponse #dutchreliefalliance #CommunityEmpowerment #childprotection #RealtimeReview #projectimpact #TogetherforChange #BuildingResilience #EmpoweringCommunities #sustainabledevelopment #HopeInAction

Amid the severe drought from 2021 to 2023 in Kenya, thousands of households across arid and semi-arid pastoral lands faced a devastating loss of livelihoods. With livestock wiped out and access to essentials like food and water severely diminished, communities saw rising cases of acute malnutrition, especially among children. In response, Oxfam in Kenya, with support from Australian Humanitarian Partnership and in partnership with Strategies for Northern Development (SND) and the ASAL Humanitarian Network , addressed the urgent needs in Marsabit County. Together, we rehabilitated critical water infrastructure, installed solar-powered pumping systems for boreholes, and set up high-capacity elevated steel water tanks. Alongside these efforts, we provided essential non-food items like soap, water purifiers, and 100-liter water storage tanks to support the most affected communities. Thanks to these interventions, over 4,000 households in Kubi Dibayu now have access to a sustainable water supply through upgraded systems, restoring hope and resilience in the region. watch more of this: https://bit.ly/3NIVdkV #DroughtResponse #MarsabitCounty #WaterForAll #CommunityResilience #OxfamKenya #AustralianAid #SNDKenya #AHN #WaterSecurity #HumanitarianAid #TransformingLives

Thrilled to participate in the Ninth session of the Africa Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (#AfRP9) and the Eighth High-Level Meeting on Disaster Risk Reduction in Windhoek, Namibia (21-24 October 2024), under the theme “Act Now for the Resilient Africa We Want.” During the session, we had the opportunity to present on the importance of early warning early action (EWEA) in reducing loss and damage during disasters, drawing lessons from our experience in Kenya’s ASAL counties. Key takeaways: - EWEA saves lives and livelihoods. - For EWEA to be truly effective, it must be locally driven and community-centered. Communities should not just receive early warning information—they must be involved in the program design. - Inclusivity is vital: EWEA should respect local languages, cultures, and indigenous knowledge, and ensure the active participation of marginalized groups, including youth, women, and persons with disabilities. - Given the multiple shocks affecting the African continent, we need to adopt a multi-hazard, multisectoral, and multi-country approach for successful and effective early warning and early action. Shocks know no boundaries. - State and non-state actors must commit to funding EWEA efforts—early warning without early action is meaningless. - Investment in institutional capacity, research, and technology (such as artificial intelligence and simulation) is critical. Innovation and bold ideas will help us navigate the challenges ahead, especially as Africa remains uniquely vulnerable to disasters. Let’s keep pushing forward for a resilient, inclusive Africa where no one is left behind. SND, in partnership with Plan International Kenya, is empowering school leaders through a four-day training for the Boards of Management (BOM) and ECD teachers from Dukana Girls’ Primary and Junior Secondary schools, plus three others! The focus? School development planning, child protection, and safeguarding—essential tools to create safer, more supportive learning spaces for girls. With expert facilitators from the Ministry of Education, Teachers Service Commission, and the Department of Children Services, these leaders are gaining the skills to transform their schools and inspire the next generation of change-makers. When schools thrive, communities thrive. Together, we’re making that a reality! #LeadershipInEducation #BOMTraining #EmpoweringSchools #ChildProtection #GirlsEducation #NorthernKenya"

Over the past three days, SND teamed up with the Moyale Sub-County Public Health Department to train health club patrons from six schools across Marsabit County! With support from Australian Humanitarian Partnership and in partnership with Oxfam in Kenya, this initiative is all about creating healthier, more resilient school environments by empowering students and teachers to lead the way through newly strengthened health clubs. But that’s just the beginning! Next up are hygiene promotion sessions aimed at equipping patrons and students to become hygiene champions. We’re sparking a ripple effect of cleaner, healthier habits that will extend beyond the classroom, transforming entire communities.
