Each October 17 we take time to raise awareness for the hundreds of millions of people around the world living in extreme poverty. This year’s theme, focused on the societal and institutional stigmatization and discrimination of people living in poverty, directly connects to the work we do everyday to help integrate and empower our program participants across seven countries. Our latest story highlights the journey of three Kuza Jamii project participants who identified a niche opportunity in their community and ran with it. BOMA is empowering the people and places most impacted by climate change. Our goal is to end extreme poverty in Africa.
About us
BOMA is a Kenyan-based non-profit (also registered in the U.S.) that implements a time-bound graduation model (REAP) in six countries throughout the drylands of Africa. Through adapted programs that target women, children, climate-impacted communities, refugees and internally displaced populations, and youth, we aim to build the resiliency of individuals and households living in extreme poverty so they can feed their children, pay for school fees and medical care, invest in families, and survive shocks such as drought or medical emergencies. Since 2009, BOMA has established 44,559 sustainable businesses and 6,461+ savings groups, enrolled 133,677 participants, and transformed the lives of over 804,000 people. Our goal is to scale our reach via government adoption to reach three million individuals by 2027. Together, we can help foster prosperity through dignity for the most vulnerable and marginalized populations in Africa.

Today we recognize International Day of the Girl Child. Despite the many challenges facing girls across the African continent, they are not only courageous in the face of crisis, but hopeful for the future. Through BOMA’s poverty graduation programs, thousands of women like Marcel have gained the means to provide their daughters with the education they deserve. By empowering women to launch businesses and lift their families out of poverty, BOMA ensures that girls, in particular, have the resources and opportunities to stay in school and thrive. #internationaldayofthegirlchild #standwithrefugees #visionforthefuture [Photo Credit: Yannick Unk]

Reflecting on UNGA/Climate Week and the journey ahead, we must remember that the best solutions are often found closest to the areas in crisis. Learn how climate change is further complicating the refugee narrative, and how our approach is providing local, contextualized solutions to build livelihoods and resilience. 10 Key Takeaways from the "What's Next: Evidence & Innovation" Panel at AVSI Foundation Foundation's Graduating to Resilience DC Learning Summit Over the past three days, leaders in the graduation space have gathered to foster a rich dialogue on advancing graduation programs, like the Graduating to Resilience Activity, with a focus on resilience, inclusivity, and long-term impact: 1. Innovation & Adaptation: Continuous innovation is essential, especially for climate resilience, youth engagement, and parenting support. 2. Government Partnerships: Collaborating with governments is vital to scale graduation programs and reach more individuals living in ultra-poverty. 3. Evidence-Based Customization: Tailoring interventions based on evidence helps identify the optimal support for participants. 4. Financial Inclusion: Transitioning to formal financial inclusion and leveraging technology is crucial for effective program implementation. 5. Cost-Effectiveness: Efforts to standardize cost-effectiveness measurements are ongoing, balancing costs with maintaining impact. 6. Challenging Contexts: Graduation approaches can thrive in resource-poor environments, building on existing community capacities. 7. Technology Integration: Utilizing technology enhances service delivery, especially in financial services and data collection. 8. Collaborative Learning: Sharing experiences across implementers helps advance graduation programs and improve outcomes. 9. Holistic Approach: Graduation programs are evolving to be more comprehensive, integrating early childhood development and market systems. 10. Ongoing Research Needs: There’s a call for more evidence on spillover effects and the long-term impacts of different program components. These insights highlight the panel's commitment to innovation, scale, evidence, and adaptability in enhancing graduation programs. #BuildingResilienceTogether AVSI Foundation American Institutes for Research BOMA.ngo Trickle Up Innovations for Poverty Action Glynnis Melnicove Lauren Hendricks Nathanael Goldberg
