The Cayman Islands Airports Authority (CIAA) was pleased to host its semi-annual FOD Walkabout at Owen Roberts International Airport on Friday, 26 July 2024. CIAA’s Safety team, employees from Flowers Air Dispatch Services (FADS), Cayman Dispatch Services (CDS), FedEx, Vigoro, and Cayman Islands Fire Service (CIFS) joined in walking the runway and other operational areas of the airport to rid these surfaces of any Foreign Object Debris (FOD). “FOD poses a significant threat to the safety of air travel and has the potential to damage aircraft during critical phases of flight which can lead to catastrophic loss of life and, at the very least, increase maintenance and operating costs. The latest figures estimate that FOD costs the airline industry $1.26 billion dollars a year,” said CIAA Chief Safety Management Officer Andrew McLaughlin.
