🗣️ "Faces of the C²DH - A team beyond borders": Research scientist and migration scholar Inna Ganschow, PhD is raising voices for individuals in overlooked communities. 📖 Her latest publication, released in march 2025, focuses on forced labourers from the Soviet Union in #Luxembourg during WWII. The project, a cooperation between the Luxembourg Ministry of State and the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C2DH) - University of Luxembourg, aims to glean more insight on the personal histories of those brought to work in the steel mills of Luxembourg, one of which was situated at Belval, Esch-sur-Alzette, where the University of Luxembourg today has one of its main campuses. 📍Learn more about Inna Ganschow and her other projects here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eUPBMXuH University of Luxembourg Amis de l'Université du Luxembourg Jens Kreisel Geraldine Knudson Raphaël Cayrol Pierre Weimerskirch #ContemporaryHistory #migrations #ww2 #storytelling #academia #research #education #culturalheritage

If you're working with colonial-era sources or exploring the potential of digital methodologies in historical research— or even just curious about how digital tools can reshape our understanding of the past—don’t miss this Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C2DH) - University of Luxembourg event!
Hi everyone! I am excited to finally share a project I have been working on for the last few weeks. We will be hosting the inaugural workshop of the Colonial Digital History Network on 13 May 2025, at the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C2DH) - University of Luxembourg. The theme for this session is "Colonial Worlds, Digital Methods". Digital methods offer powerful ways to engage with complex colonial histories —uncovering patterns, connections, and silences conventional methodologies might miss. Yet, digital humanities has also been critiqued for potentially reproducing epistemic divides. This workshop explores how digital approaches can instead serve as tools to interrogate and address historical imbalances. The format of the day will include multiple presentations of various themes (with some inspiring guests!). To close, we will hold a brief “roundtable”. We are thrilled to have Alex Moradi (Free University of Bozen-Balzono) and Sean Takats (C2DH, University of Luxembourg) as our keynote speakers! This workshop welcomes researchers at all stages—from early experimentation to polished projects—interested in colonial-era histories and digital methods. Potential topics include, but are certainly not limited to: - analysing colonial sources, - how digital methods can be helpful in addressing historical silences, - visualising complex historical data using GIS, - exploring ethical digitisation and analysis of colonial records created through unequal power dynamics, - does digital humanities research contribute to the historical divide by perpetuating silences, and how can it be harnessed to more purposefully trace these gaps? - learning from 500 years of written accounts of Africa with new tools, and what these sources mean in the context of research today (problematising and contextualising their use) - or even finding the best software for housing and searching datasets and archive photos. Whatever your interest in colonial histories, this workshop offers an opportunity to explore diverse interests and engage in critical conversations with a wide range of scholars. Registration is open now through our website: https://lnkd.in/eAnD8EqD While we offer a hybrid format, in-person attendance is encouraged, and limited travel grants are available. (Come and visit me in Luxembourg!🇱🇺) If you are interested in presenting your research, kindly submit abstracts of up to 300 words to lauren.coetzee@uni.lu by 18 April 2025. Please include your name, affiliation and contact details. Decisions will be communicated by the end of April. For more information about the workshop, please contact lauren.coetzee@uni.lu. #DigitalHistory #ColonialStudies #DigitalHumanities #AcademicWorkshop #HistoricalResearch #Luxembourg

🕯️ 81 years ago, on 23 March 1944, the 3 Luxembourg resistance movements merged and became Unio'n vun de Lëtzebuerger Fräiheetsorganisatiounen (Unio'n). These three organisations were the Lëtzeburger Patriote Liga (LPL), the Lëtzeburger Volleks-Legio'n (LVL) and the Lëtzeburger Ro'de Lé'w (LRL). 📢 Call for Papers – Online Seminar "Public History for Contested and Conflicting Past(s)"🎓 The students of the Master in Digital and Public History (MADiPH) at the University of Luxembourg invite submissions for the online seminar "Public History for Contested and Conflicting Past(s)" which will take place online on Thursday, 19 June 2025. The past is subject to multiple historical interpretations. Perhaps more than ever, the current context offers many examples of contested – and sometimes conflicting – views and interpretations of the past. Beyond certain events and topics that appear very controversial, the overall production, mediation, and discussion of history are also at stake. The very existence, practices and discussion of evidence-based research are sometimes threatened. In this context, we may question what public history can bring to the discussion, what roles historians (still) have in the public interpretations of the past. How does public history deal with controversies, handle contested and conflicting topics? We welcome proposals from students (Bachelor, Master or PhD) in history, anthropology, political science, journalism, education (or associated disciplines) from all over the world. 🔗 Submission details: https://lnkd.in/eP5GqJ4a 📌 Deadline: 22 April 2025 University of Luxembourg International Federation for Public History Schweizer Netzwerk Public History Carleton Centre for Public History UH Center for Public History The EUROPAEUM Europaeum Scholars Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media #PublicHistory #CallForPapers #DigitalHistory #HistoryMatters #MADiPH #UniversityOfLuxembourg

💗 The First Digital Love Letters: A Hidden Story of Code 💓 Titaÿna Kauffmann-Will, a PhD student at the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C2DH) - University of Luxembourg, is currently exploring the use of source code as a historical source—emphasizing the need for its historicization and contextualization to write a more informed history of the digital age. 🌟 One fascinating example? 💗 In 1952, the Ferranti Mark I, one of the world’s first computers at the The University of Manchester, did something extraordinary—it generated a series of randomly assembled love letters. These were no ordinary declarations of passion; they were written entirely by an algorithm, signed by “M.U.C.” (Manchester University Computer). This playful algorithm, created by Christopher Strachey, wasn’t just a quirky experiment—it was a groundbreaking moment in digital creativity. Strachey’s code parodied human writing with absurd yet poetic results, using true randomness from hardware-generated noise to create unique, gender-neutral love letters. While some saw it as a mere joke, it was, in fact, one of the earliest instances of a machine mimicking human expression—a direct ancestor of modern AI.
