ICPM of UL participates in the cooperation meeting organized by the European Cancer Organization with the TOGAS project With the aim of improving collaboration in all types of cancer screening and promoting the exchange of opinions on project development, on October 16, 2024, the European Cancer Organization hosted the 4th Cooperation Meeting, where the TOGAS EU project was represented by the Institute of Clinical and Preventive Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine and Life Sciences at the Latvijas Universitate (ICPM LU). The meeting, opened by Riccardo Moschetti, a representative of the European Cancer Organization, also featured administrative and scientific leaders from the SOLACE (Strengthening the screening of Lung Cancer in Europe), EUCanScreen (Joint action on implementation of cancer screening programs), and PRAISE-U (PRostate cancer Awareness and Initiative for Screening in the European Union) projects, who discussed the progress of their projects and explored the possibility of creating comprehensive and sustainable cancer screening programs accessible to all EU citizens. This is particularly important as existing screening programs in the EU need to address deficiencies and develop new strategies for cancer types where unified strategies do not exist. Early detection of cancer and screening are critical for improving patient survival rates. Equally important is for project representatives to share data and knowledge among themselves, thereby avoiding duplication of efforts and saving resources. Therefore, meetings of this kind, which bring together representatives from various projects, are very valuable. “The meeting on the implementation of cancer screening projects funded by the EU concluded with a commitment to continue working on effective cancer screening solutions in Europe and to maintain cooperation among different projects. The insights gained from collectively sharing the experiences gathered during the project will help achieve the highest possible quality outcomes, which are important not only for the creation of cancer screening programs but also for ensuring their sustainability and accessibility,” said Danute Ražuka-Ebela, the scientific coordinator of the TOGAS project, emphasizing that the synergy between the TOGAS, SOLACE, PRAISE U, and EUCanScreen projects provides significant opportunities to improve cancer screening across Europe. “Although each project pertains to a specific type of cancer—such as stomach, lung, or prostate— they share a common comprehensive goal of reducing the burden of cancer and promoting equitable access to screening programs,” concluded D. Ražuka-Ebela."

Let’s talk about obesity and gastric cancer 🗪 Obesity is a growing health concern, and its link to cancer is becoming increasingly clear. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), obesity is estimated to cause at least 200,000 new cancer cases each year in Europe, including gastric cancer. Research shows that higher body fat levels are associated with increased inflammation and hormonal imbalances, which can promote cancer cell growth. The TOGAS project is dedicated to improving gastric cancer prevention across the EU by developing effective screening and early detection strategies. By promoting healthier choices and providing the tools for early detection, TOGAS aims to reduce gastric cancer across Europe.
