A decade to act. Let’s shift toward a regenerative blue economy, rooted in science and respect for nature. 🌊 After an inspiring 16th Monaco Blue Initiative, next stop: the BEFF, on June 7–8 in Monaco — turning ideas into concrete action. As Robert Calcagno, CEO of the Oceanographic Institute of Monaco, reminded us in his closing remarks: “The time for reflection is over - now is the time for action." Robyn Curnow #BEFF #BlueEconomy #UNOC3 #OceanAction #MBI2025
⏳ 10 years — that’s all we have left to implement radical change. A decade to urgently transition to a sustainable blue economy. One that stops relying on extraction and starts embracing regeneration. One that doesn’t just take nature into account — but is rooted in nature itself. One that uses science to guide public and private decision-makers more effectively. This is the transformation we need. Not just to preserve the health of the oceans, but to allow it to regenerate and recover the vitality they once had. The 16th edition of the Monaco Blue Initiative - jointly organized by the Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco and the Institut océanographique de Monaco - which has just concluded, helped pave the way, opening key discussions and building momentum for what comes next : the Blue Economy and Finance Forum (BEFF). Indeed, we’ve made a clear and bold choice: to place blue economy and finance at the heart of our work, notably by organizing the Blue Economy and Finance Forum (BEFF) on June 7–8 in Monaco, to generate real decisions and concrete action. This special event of hashtag #UNOC3 is jointly organized with the Gouvernement Monaco, the Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco , with the support of France and Costa Rica. The BEFF is our next milestone. It won’t solve everything, but it must mark a turning point. The path is clear, but the road is long — and we’re just getting started. 🌊 Financing SDG14: Perspectives from Finance, Business, and Philanthropy As SDG14 (“Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources”) remains one of the least funded goals, this session brought together key voices to explore concrete ways to shift the tide and scale up financial support. 🎤 Moderated by Robyn Curnow, the panel featured diverse insights and initiatives aimed at unlocking capital from banks, corporations, institutions, and philanthropy: 🔹 Sylvie Goulard introduced the work of the International Advisory Panel on Biodiversity Credits (IAPB), highlighting the inclusion of marine ecosystems and the challenges of measuring marine biodiversity. 🔹 Frederik Paulsen reflected on the barriers to engaging philanthropy, tensions between sustainability and geoengineering, and the shrinking influence of multilateral bodies. 🔹 Laurence Pessez (BNP Paribas) showcased bold action: €4B for biodiversity, a dedicated blue economy fund, shipping transition finance, and marine-focused research funding. 🔹 Olivier Raybaud (SWEN Capital Partners) emphasized the role of blue startups in restoring ocean health, and the importance of linking science with impact investing — notably through the 1000 Ocean Startups coalition. 🔹 Marisa Drew (Standard Chartered Bank) shared her experience with Debt-for-Nature Swaps, the BackBlue platform, and how large corporations can integrate nature-based solutions into strategy and operations. 💡 A shared message: Solutions exist — what we need now is to finance them at scale, through bold collaboration across public, private, and philanthropic sectors. 🔥 Fireside Chats – Finance, Trade & Ocean Action On the occasion of #MBI2025, two high-level exchanges highlighted essential levers for achieving SDG14: financial mobilization and the regulation of fishing subsidies. 🌊 Guillaume Sainteny, President of Plan Bleu (UNEP/MAP), presented a new report dedicated to the financial needs for SDG14 in the Mediterranean. 💡 Objective: to fill the financing gap, better align public and private investments, and make the Mediterranean a model for other ocean regions. He also stressed the need to stop toxic subsidies. ⚖️ Angela Paolini ELLARD, Deputy Director-General of the WTO, revisited the historic 2022 Agreement on fisheries subsidies. 💬 A key text for limiting overfishing, preserving marine resources and guaranteeing food security. Next step: ratification by Member States and adoption of additional measures to combat overcapacity. 🔑 Two interventions that serve as a reminder that finance and regulation are essential pillars of a sustainable ocean future. 🌊 Bridging Science and Policy for Ocean Action Just weeks ahead of the One Ocean Science Congress, this session explored how to strengthen the dialogue between scientists and decision-makers — political, economic, and institutional — to drive effective strategies for the conservation, management, and restoration of marine ecosystems, from coasts to the deep sea. 🎙️ Moderated by Robyn Curnow, the panel featured leading voices from across the globe: 🔹 Dr. David Obura (IPBES) shared insights from the Nexus Assessment on ocean-linked solutions that connect nature, economy, and society. 🔹 Prof. Heather Koldewey (ZSL) called for more accessible science, better communication, and stronger engagement between researchers and policymakers. 🔹 Dr. Hyi-Seung Lee (Korea Institute of Ocean Science & Technology (KIOST)) emphasized the power of cutting-edge technologies and international cooperation to inform policy. 🔹 Dr. Philippe Charvis (IRD) presented the BRIDGES program, focusing on sustainable fisheries and deep-sea research rooted in local knowledge. 🔹 Mr. Olivier Le Nezet (CNPMEM) highlighted the importance of participatory science, robust data, and inclusive management to ensure ocean health and sustainable fisheries. 💡 The message was clear: to meet today’s ocean challenges, science must inform policy — and policy must embrace science. Collaboration, inclusivity, and action are the way forward. 🌊 Towards a Regenerative Blue Economy: Restore, Innovate, Include. From overexploited oceans to thriving ecosystems, speakers at the Monaco Blue Initiative called for a shift in mindset. It’s no longer just about preserving—it’s about regenerating. Through science, innovative finance (like blue bonds and blended capital), cutting-edge technologies, and strong local engagement, a new path is emerging. 👉 Investing in nature, sharing knowledge, empowering coastal communities, and aligning policy, research, and markets are key to building a blue economy that is both prosperous and resilient. 🎤 With inspiring insights from: Daniel Hooft (Kelp Blue, The Netherlands), on nature-based ocean regeneration and community-driven impact Daniela V. Fernandez (Sustainable Ocean Alliance, USA), on finance and tech as drivers of rapid transition Bertrand Charron (Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) Council, UK), highlighting the need for robust ESG KPIs in sustainable aquaculture Barkha Mossaë (IUCN & Edinburgh Ocean Leaders, Mauritius/Kenya), advocating for equity, inclusion, and African leadership in ocean governance 💡 Africa and the next generation are not just participants - they are leaders and co-creators of the future ocean economy. 🌐 Let’s make the regenerative blue economy the new standard. 🌊 The urgency to act for the ocean has never been greater. On March 24th, at #MBI2025, H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco reminded us of the critical need for cooperation between political leaders, scientists, and economic actors to protect and sustainably manage our ocean. In today’s uncertain global context, a series of major events lies ahead — including the Blue Economy and Finance Forum this June in Monaco and the 3rd UN Ocean Conference in Nice. These are key opportunities to build momentum and drive meaningful action. 💡 The blue economy and finance sectors have a vital role to play in transforming our systems at scale. 🎯 The path is clear, the journey is long — but together, we move forward.
