Sobre nosotros

Playa Viva is a regenerative eco-luxury hotel located on the southern Pacific Coast of Mexico in the state of Guerrero. Designed using permaculture principles, for nearly 100 years, the land that was to become Playa Viva had been continuously degraded due to slash-and-burn agriculture for monoculture mango, tamarind, and coconut groves, as well as cattle ranching. When developing the Playa Viva Master Plan between 2006 and 2007, developers integrated these land parcels into its permaculture design, created a private nature preserve, as well as a restoration plan for restoring key waterways and revitalizing mangrove ecosystems. Playa Viva operates under the model of regeneration, in which the hotel goes beyond green (doing less damage), beyond sustainable (net neutral), and actually regenerates the surrounding land and community by restoring what has been lost by extractive industries and simultaneously fosters educational and economic opportunities in the surrounding community(ies). Under this model, Playa Viva has established five core goals: 1) Promote biodiversity, 2) Create cleaner and more abundant water and energy, 3) Create meaningful community, 4) Promote transformational experiences, and 5) Create a living legacy for sustainable and regenerative resort development. These five core goals represent the blueprint for socially and ecologically regenerative resort development.

We have just had to send out an update to our community following Hurricane John after a stressful week where our team were obsessively watching hurricane tracking websites knowing there was little to be done if the hurricane did decide to hit us directly. At this time of rapidly changing climate conditions, we are readily aware that our situation is not unique. We strongly believe that while we cannot change how weather systems behave we can send clear messages to our leaders about the future we want to see by how we choose to invest our money. Within our content we have asked guests to consider that- "Staying with us helps to ensure a positive legacy for your trip but what legacy are you leaving with your other purchasing decisions? We encourage you to question yourself that, every dollar spent ethically collectively has the potential to demand change." We are so fortunate that our team are safe along with their families and Playa Viva did not sustain any major damage. You can find our full statement below: Dear Playa Viva Family,  We want to start by saying a huge thank you to everyone who checked in on us after Hurricane John. We’re relieved to let you know that our team is safe and your support means the world to us.  While Playa Viva did experience some very minor damage due to excessive rainfall and 120mph winds, we were incredibly lucky -- our team's resilience and our community's strength remain unwavering. We are certain that it is thanks to our employing traditional architectural features like Palapa Roofs and suspending our award-winning treehouses on native palm trees that can flex with the hurricane-force winds that we sustained such little damage. The unpredictable weather systems we’ve seen over the past years are a growing concern, and this recent event reminds us of the urgent importance of our ongoing work to combat climate change. At Playa Viva, we are creating a more sustainable future for both the environment and the local communities we support, most directly through the ReSiMar project. Today our team will be in the local communities offering support and over the next few days they will be hard at work with recovery efforts at the hotel checking our solar installations and cleaning the beach and pathways. With just under a month until we open for Season 16 Hurricane John this won't will NOT affect any upcoming bookings. If you’re looking for ways to support, we’d love for you to consider donating to ReSiMar -- our watershed regeneration efforts—a crucial part of our mission to protect this beautiful place we all love, here- https://lnkd.in/d9DEKGge.  Thank you again for your concern, kindness and support. We look forward to welcoming you back to Playa Viva, where together, we’ll continue to create a brighter, more sustainable future.  With deep gratitude,   The Playa Viva Team

“An exceptional stay” Our guests tell us this regularly and now The MICHELIN Guide has reaffirmed it by awarding Playa Viva with two MICHELIN Keys. Equal to a restaurant gaining a MICHELIN Star, the MICHELIN Keys are provided to hotels that have been specially selected for offering the most outstanding stays. Vetted by passionate, independent MICHELIN experts taking into account five universal criteria: excellence in architecture and interior design, quality and consistency of service, overall personality and character, value for the price, and a significant contribution to the neighborhood or setting. MICHELIN Key hotels don’t just fulfil one of these criteria. They are the best of the best in all categories. As a hotel passionately working to facilitate large-scale community-driven transformation for both human well-being and environmental abundance, this award is an example to the industry of how tourism funds can be used to drive change while still successfully curating a world-leading guest experience. We thank our team for their passion and dedication to our mission and our guests for enabling Playa Viva to be much more than just a hotel. On The Pass x David Leventhal Founder of Playa Viva In January 2023, Gabriel traveled to the southern Pacific Coast of Mexico, in the state of Guerrero, to experience Playa Viva, an eco-luxury and regenerative boutique hotel founded by our next guest, David Leventhal, and his then-wife shortly after purchasing the land in 2006. David, originally from North Carolina, spent his early years in Mexico City, immersing himself in the country's rich heritage and culture. Initially pursuing a career in tech and software development, David eventually left that world to follow his passion for hospitality, sustainability, and his love for Mexico. Playa Viva is situated at the base of the Sierra Madre Mountains, just forty minutes from Zihuatanejo-Ixtapa International Airport (ZIH). This unique hotel embodies the concept "where your vacation meets your values™," dedicated to a triple-bottom-line approach that benefits the planet, people, and prosperity. With 19 treehouse rooms spread across nearly a mile of private beach and 200 acres of nature reserve, guests enjoy "The Luxury of Immersion in Nature." In 2023, Playa Viva achieved B-Corp Certification, becoming a world-leading example of experiential travel. The hotel offers an authentic, all-encompassing regenerative experience, combining wellness, action/adventure, excursions to unique places, and a commitment to restoring and regenerating the landscape and local communities. David’s passion for sustainability also led him to co-found Regenerative Travel, a company that connects travelers with independent hotels deeply rooted in their communities, enabling people, nature, and culture to thrive. Think of it as a Relais & Châteaux for ultra-eco-conscious sustainable properties worldwide. (I’ll include a link in the show notes to explore it further.) During my stay at Playa Viva, David and I discovered a shared love for building community and fostering genuine human connection—a mission David has successfully pursued since the inception of Playa Viva. In this episode, you’ll hear more about Playa Viva’s core values and the numerous accolades it has received from prestigious publications like Condé Nast Traveler, Travel + Leisure Co., and Global Design News, which have elevated David and his team to a global stage.
