It’s clear that investing in childhood literacy and numeracy is more than worth it: When children can read and understand basic math by age 10, they’re more likely to continue learning, advance their education, and build economic power. While we’ve made significant progress in worldwide literacy, our work is not done. Literacy rates in low and middle-income countries continue to lag behind that of their high-income neighbors. Not only that: this trend has worsened in recent years, largely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Ensuring children can read and understand basic numeracy is not just a moral imperative. Evidence shows that to ensure long-term growth, countries need to invest in health and education that goes beyond just access to learning, and actively works to improve children’s basic skills in literacy and numeracy to unlock their potential (academically and beyond). Getting these foundations right is a spring board to drive stronger education systems. Following #WorldLiteracyDay, learn more about our work to advance scalable solutions to global literacy so that every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential. https://lnkd.in/g2rPs78x

September 9th is the International Day to Protect Education from Attack. On this day, let's remember the millions of children worldwide who are denied their fundamental right to learn due to conflict, violence, and discrimination. In Africa, we are particularly reminded of the challenge that 89% of school-aged children cannot read basic texts by age 10. It is time we developed the structures that ensure all children have adequate teaching materials and methodologies, sufficient funding and resources, teacher training, and foundational learning interventions. Join us in the call to protect education at all costs. Let's advocate for policies that offer practical steps to implement and enhance foundational learning programs for every child, regardless of their circumstances. Together, we can build an Africa where quality education is a right, not a privilege.

Today, as we celebrate World Literacy Day, we want to share a powerful piece written by former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo. In his op-ed, he brings attention to Africa's educational crisis and emphasizes the urgent need for action. With Africa at a critical crossroads, Obasanjo highlights the importance of investing in foundational learning. His words are compelling: "Basic literacy and numeracy are the foundations on which the delivery of every development objective outlined in Agenda 2063 will be achieved." This underscores that education is not an isolated issue but one that impacts every aspect of Africa's development. Obasanjo urges African leaders to acknowledge their shared responsibility and take immediate, decisive action to equip young Africans with essential skills. As we engage the African Union Year of Education in 2024, his message serves as a rallying cry for change.
