As we strive to improve educational outcomes globally, it's crucial to recognise the transformative power of local language instruction in foundational learning. Research consistently shows that children learn best when they are taught in their mother tongue, especially during the early years. This approach not only enhances literacy and numeracy skills but also fosters a deeper understanding of cultural heritage and identity. The impact of local language instruction includes: 👉Improved academic performance: Studies have demonstrated that students who begin their education in their native language tend to perform better academically and have higher retention rates. 👉Cultural preservation: By using local languages in education, we help preserve cultural traditions and values, enriching the learning experience. 👉Increased accessibility: Local language instruction makes education more accessible to marginalised communities, bridging the gap between home and school environments. From Ghana to Kenya, local language instruction has been a game-changer. In Ghana, for instance, the introduction of local languages in primary education has led to significant improvements in reading comprehension and overall academic achievement. How can we support scale this? 👉Provide educators with the tools and training needed to effectively teach in local languages. 👉Create educational materials that are culturally relevant and accessible. 👉Encourage governments to adopt policies that support local language instruction in schools. What other strategies can we use to improve learning outcomes with the use of mother language?

#FoundationalLearning interventions are most successful when they are backed by strong data sets and rigorous monitoring. More countries are creating innovative monitoring systems to support teachers and their students. For example, Nepal and Senegal are putting administrative learning data to good use to monitor student performance and adjust foundational learning interventions so that students can receive more targeted support and instruction. Though this progress is encouraging, there is more to be done. Support from ministries, districts, and sub-districts is key to monitor students’ learning and ensure interventions are being effectively implemented. We are proud to have Milly Asio attending the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) advanced course which is ongoing in Nairobi, Kenya on behalf of VVOB. This training is for governments, partners, and organisations already implementing TaRL and is aimed at strengthening teaching practices, classroom management, and data-driven decision-making. Milly delivered a presentation on UCatchUp, which is the contextualised government-led, school-based TaRL model that we are implementing in Kasese district and municipality. We look forward to benefiting from Milly’s expertise after the training especially as we continue to partner with the Ministry of Education and Sports towards scaling UCatchUp nation-wide. President Hakainde Hichilema said it best his article in The Africa Report: “we must hold ourselves and each other accountable for our children’s learning.” Government prioritization is crucial to improving education systems so that every child can develop foundational reading and math skills from an early age. We can see the benefits of government support in implementing #FoundationalLearning interventions – in Zambia, the national Catch-up program, which uses a TaRL (targeted instruction) approach to engage learners, has shown a 30% increase in learning outcomes at the foundational level. And similar success stories have been shown in other countries across the continent. With continued collaboration between governments and education stakeholders, strong data monitoring, and accountability - we can improve learning and development outcomes for millions of African children.
