Smallholder farmers in Northeast Nigeria face immense challenges, including climate change, unpredictable weather patterns, and limited access to quality agricultural inputs. To address this, the USAID funded Feed the Future, Nigeria Rural Resilience Activity (RRA) has been working to strengthen seed systems and improve farmers' access to climate-resilient, high-yield seeds. Our latest learning brief, "Building Climate Resilience through Improved Access to Seeds in Northeast Nigeria," explores how targeted interventions are: - Enhancing food security and productivity - Supporting smallholder farmers to adapt to climate shocks - Promoting sustainable agricultural practices in fragile contexts By working with partners, RRA is helping transform the agriculture landscape and build resilience for vulnerable communities. Market Research
A five-year USAID-funded Activity on economic recovery and growth through systemic change in market systems development.
About us
The Feed the Future Nigeria Rural Resilience Activity is a five- year, USAID-funded program which seeks to facilitate economic recovery and growth in vulnerable, conflict-affected areas by promoting systemic change in market systems. The Activity is part of the U.S. Government's global hunger and food security initiative aimed at giving families and communities in some of the world's poorest countries the freedom and opportunity to lift themselves out of food insecurity and malnutrition. The Activity also empowers vulnerable households, communities and systems to cope with current shocks and stresses and to be prepared to withstand future ones. The Activity is implemented by Mercy Corps, with support from the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) and Save the Children (SCI), primarily in the Northeast states of Adamawa, Borno, Gombe, and Yobe. Through the COVID-19 Mitigation Response Program, the Activity's operational areas also include Benue, Kebbi, Niger and Ebonyi states, as well as the Federal Capital Territory. The value chains supported by the Activity include maize, cowpea, groundnuts, rice production, and small ruminants. Additionally, the Ukraine-Russia Supplemental Cash Response Intervention is implemented in the primary locations of the Activity; Borno, Adamawa, Yobe and Gombe States. Using market-led approaches, the Activity is moving over 600,000 individuals out of chronic vulnerability and poverty.

EMPOWERING NUTRITION AND CELEBRATING LOCAL CUISINE: RRA MARKS THE 2024 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM. At the USAID-funded Feed the Future Nigeria Rural Resilience Activity (RRA), we are proud to commemorate the 2024 16 Days of Activism with activities that empower and inspire. A key highlight is our impactful cooking demonstration in Gombe State, themed “Promoting Local Food Utilization through Cooking Demonstration.” This initiative brought together women from Akko and Gombe LGAs, equipping them with practical skills to transform locally sourced crops into nutritious, delicious meals for their families. Beyond improving household nutrition, this activity reinforces the importance of leveraging local resources to meet dietary needs and foster economic and cultural sustainability. Speaking at the event, facilitator Salome Yusuf remarked, “Many of our women already have access to the ingredients needed to prepare healthy meals but may not realize their full potential. This demonstration empowers them to make the most of local crops, creating balanced meals that meet their families’ nutritional requirements.” Participants learned how to prepare an array of nutritious dishes, including: 1. Masa 2. Awara (Tofu) 3. Moi-Moi 4. Orange-Fleshed Sweet Potato (OFSP) Porridge 5. Soya Milk 6. Traditional soups, and more. Through these demonstrations, RRA is not just promoting better nutrition but also: · Empowering women as change agents in their communities, · Strengthening food security by championing local crop utilization, · Preserving cultural culinary traditions and · Building stronger social and economic connections within families and communities. We believe small, practical initiatives like this create lasting impact, fostering healthier households and more resilient communities. Together, we are building a future where local food systems thrive and every family has the tools to achieve sustainable nutrition. #NutritionMatters #EmpoweringWomen #LocalFood #SustainableFoodSystems #RuralResilience John Rachkara Nurein Abdulfattah Deborah Obise Dooshima Tarkehe Jamila Mahdi Esomchi Foundation Maureen Chiedozie Raphael Ehiabhi Guteng Walnshak Tega Ojugberu Helen Gakarnan Adumun Kwaji Barka Peter

The Integration of Black Soldier Fly technology into feed production has been revolutionary. It has enabled poultry farmers mitigate the rising cost of the usual ingredients in feed formulation. This has also limited the competition between humans and animals on staples that would otherwise be used in Poultry feed formulation. Thank you Entojutu for being a reliable partner in driving this initiative to our participants in the northeast of Nigeria.
On the 8th of July 2024, the Entojutu Sustainable Development Foundation, in collaboration with Mercy Corps Rural Resilience Project, organized an exposure visit for its beneficiaries from five northeastern states in Nigeria. This visit aimed to showcase Entojutu’s partnership with International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA)- HealthyDiets4Africa Project, funded by the European Union (EU). The project highlights the innovative use of Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) to treat aflatoxin-contaminated cereals, transforming potential agricultural losses into sustainable opportunities. Beneficiaries were introduced to the practical application of BSFL technology, witnessing firsthand how aflatoxin-contaminated maize, often discarded as waste, can be converted into valuable protein. One participant shared their excitement, stating: "I was awed seeing aflatoxin-contaminated maize, which appeared to be a loss, being converted into valuable protein by Black Soldier Fly larvae. Now I am not afraid of any waste. I will continue to farm flies without fear.” The visit also exposed the group to other groundbreaking innovations in the agricultural value chain, such as yam seed multiplication technology and cassava innovations, which provide advanced methods for improving crop productivity, propagation, and value addition. Supported by Mercy Corps Feed the Future, Nigeria Rural Resilience Activity, this initiative empowered the beneficiaries with knowledge and practical solutions to tackle environmental and economic challenges. The exposure emphasized the transformative potential of sustainable technologies in addressing agricultural inefficiencies, reducing waste, and enhancing livelihoods for rural farmers.
