The AI Innovation Center was packed for yesterday’s Lunch & Learn: Series A Funding with Hans De Neve. 🙌 You could hear a pin drop as Carbyon CEO and founder Hans De Neve talked about Carbyon’s long journey to a €15.3M Series A round of funding. Hans developed direct air capture technology as a researcher at TNO. He joined the HighTechXL deep tech venture building program in 2019, built a team and launched his business. In the past five years, Hans and the team have further refined the technology, built demonstrators, raised funding and now stand at 45 employees. Entrepreneurs from the ecosystem packed in to hear Hans’ story about raising a Series A. They took a lot of notes. ✍🏼 Some key takeaways: 🔹 Before you embark on a Series A funding journey, be sure you have the support of your current investors. “Ensure every one of your existing investors agrees to move to a Series A. Otherwise, there is no point in talking to other investors. You’re lost from the start.” 🔹 Plan on a Series A taking a year to close. It took Carbyon more than one year to close, from beginning in April 2023 to closing in July 2024. “Time is ticking and your bank account is going lower and lower.” 🔹 Know your runway. Just three months after closing the Series A, Hans has already started a Series B round of funding. “I’m already busy with Series B. We know we need to set the scene now.” 🔹 You must have a data room, extended pitch deck, short pitch deck prepared. Hans says it takes 2-3 months just to get the data room ready for investors to view. 🔹 Understand that a limited number of investors want to be lead investors. Hans talks to 1-2 investors each week, so he knows. Carbyon had one lead investor, Siemens. They added the other investor group from there. 🔹 Allow plenty of time to discuss “governance” of the company, rules on voting power, advisor boards, share pool for employees, etc. It took Carbyon three full months to agree on governance issues. “It’s like you have to form a government with different political parties.” 🔹 You need someone on your side who knows how the investors think. “Don’t try this yourself!” 🙏 Thanks to Hans for laying it all out on the table: the good, the bad and the ugly. And thanks to all who attended. We hope you learned a lot! #lunchandlearn #seriesa #impactstartups #investing
