  • Why does a new civil oath matter? In a time when rules alone aren’t enough, a new civil service oath challenges government workers to think, act, and lead with integrity. In this editorial, Daria Ofman explores why this shift matters now more than ever. “Thought and action should never part ways” states one of my heroes, Hannah Arendt. Her clarity strikes me even more in times like this, where opinions are too loud and extreme and sincere dialogues are rare. As Better Future embarks on more transformational work with government organizations in the coming year, I read about the new civil service oath, that took effect this January. Being a lawyer by education and a compassionate activist by heart, it had my full attention. The old Dutch civil servant’s oath was introduced in 1929, and, in summary stated: I have obtained this position lawfully, will keep information confidential, and will abide by regulations. The emphasis was on following the rules; doing things right. Yet we all know that this is not enough. We need courageous individuals that also dare to question: are we doing the right things? The new oath was written with exactly that in mind. It now states: “I work in the public interest for our society and am fully committed to this.” It also empathizes a commitment to fairness, integrity and respect, strangely enough not a given, in civil service oaths across Europe. It is written in a more modern and human language—one that shifts from ‘I promise to follow the rules’ to ‘I promise to serve what is better for my country’. Which might imply sometimes not following the rules. This oath invites self-reflection and challenges civil servants to consult their own moral compass. Rather than blindly following, or even hiding behind rules, it actively encourages people to think for themselves. For Hannah Arendt, that’s where courage comes in: thinking. Far from easy, and very necessary. I know, an oath alone will not change a culture, let alone an entire public system overnight. Shaping behavior, values, and institutional norms requires constant work. I do believe it is a meaningful step in the right direction. I find it hopeful to see this reform taking place now, precisely when our democratic institutions need the people shaping it to think and act with conviction. We are honored to support and collaborate with civil servants who dedicate themselves to doing the right things, things that take courage. I’m looking forward to taking a lot of civil servants out of their office, creating places where good people meet, connecting groups that rarely meet, nurturing the courage to think and act in fairness and integrity. Thought and action should never part ways. Daria #BetterFuture #Editorial #Oath #Courage

  • What happens when you take a group of trailblazers from TAUW Group through Rotterdam, exploring different perspectives on their better future? Yes, we’re being inspired by remarkable changemakers who are transforming their corners of the city: from Tim Lobker at RRAworks to @Mohamed Abdulahi at @Moskee De Middenweg, from Yasmina Khababi's at Freshtables to Dirck Slabbekoorn and Heilige Boontjes Boontjes. Each of them shared stories that radiated genuine passion and purpose. Something even more magical happened. Beating the rain on Rotterdam's streets, going from one place to another, professional guards were dropped and genuine human connections emerged. Conversations flowed that had never happened before in the office– stories were shared that made us laugh, cry, think deeply, and ask meaningful questions. This is what we believe in: true organizational transformation starts with human connection. When leaders step out of their comfort zones and into spaces of vulnerability and openness, that's where the real magic of future-proofing begins. Want to inspire your organization's next chapter? Sometimes all it takes is stepping outside together. 🚶♂️ #ImpactExpedition #BetterFuture #FutureProof #Rotterdam

  • Be brave and sign up for the Art of Facilitating! Don’t let us convince you. Here is a testimonial by Lidyann van der Wolf, a facilitator at Flatland who participated in the program last year: "I understood and felt a connection with the theories and themes we covered on a very deep level. I also understand their nuances and subtle intricacies. I’ve transitioned from understanding theory to mastering the tools." This program is more than just learning skills—it’s a journey of personal and professional growth. Each participant brings their unique learning goals, which expert facilitators Daria Ofman and Salmaan Sana skillfully adapt to the group’s needs, creating a dynamic and supportive environment. What sets the Art of Facilitating apart? It seamlessly integrates hands-on practice with deep reflection. You’ll learn to master facilitation techniques while observing group dynamics in action, gaining insights into how your interventions shape the group process. This immersive approach allows you to grow as a professional, building both your confidence and competence. The Art of Facilitating isn’t just about theory or tools—it’s a professional playground where you can experiment, reflect, and grow. As a bonus the program takes place in the beautiful Austerlitz Forest. If you’re ready to take your facilitation skills to the next level, join us in our next cohort starting February 21st. We only have a few spots left - head to our website or email daria@better-future.nl to sign up! #ArtofFacilitating #Program #ProfessionalPlayground #BetterFuture

Last week on Thursday 23rd and Friday 24th of January, Daria Ofman and Annemarie de Jong from Better Future, took us, TAUW Group, on an impactful and inspiring roadtrip in Rotterdam.   We started with knowing each other better. And to be honest, do you really know your colleagues… do you know how they have been raised, what their thoughts are, what drive them, what kind of assumptions we or others have about you? That was a deep-dive from the start!   Yes, after lunch the roadtrip started. We stepped on our bikes, with our Better Future backpacks on to: hear, see and feel the inspiring stories of beautiful people. This first day we had the honour to hear the story of: - Tim Lobker from RRAworks - Mohamed abdulahi from Moskee de middenweg - Yasmina Khababi from Freshtable   And after a worldtrip dinner we went off to our hotel trying to digest all these inspiring stories. The next morning, no easy start… continu with the deep dive on what this first day did to us. And off we went again, this time a nice walk to meet our last inspiring storyteller, Dirck Slabbekoorn from Heilige Boontjes   Two days, which positively felt like a whole week. Inspiring stories which made us laugh, admire, cry, think, listen, ask questions. Thank you so much to open up your doors and share your touching stories with us. There are not enough words to describe this experience. I'm honored that I was part of this group and that we made our first steps in this journey for TAUW. So much thanks also to my colleagues who opened up their hearts to make this journey together: Clara T., David Hurtado Morcillo, Eleonora Di Bari, Henrike Branderhorst, Johannes Merkl and Micha van den Boogerd and of course Annemarie de Jong and Daria Ofman

  • Practice what we preach! We went on our own expedition last Friday to reflect, planning, and inspiration! We kicked things off by setting our personal goals for the year. Everyone made a goal that we wrote on a champagne bottle label. With the idea that once we reach our goal we will celebrate by popping the bottle! 🍾 @Mariola Wolters joined us for a session, helping us sharpen how we share our story with the world. To wrap it all up, we watched ‘La Voix Humaine’ at Theater Mooi Weer, soaking up some creative inspiration that left us energized. #BetterFuture #Teamday #Goals #Inspiration

How do we translate the ambition of ‘climate positive by 2030’ from paper to action? One of the steps was taking a group of frontrunners from ABT bv on an exciting expedition to draw inspiration, take ownership, and become an ambassador for their 5-year strategy. Our destination? Interface, a company proving that even "unsexy" products like carpet tiles can have a truly inspiring and “sexy” story. Interface leads the way in sustainability by committing to creating carbon-negative carpet tiles—an ambitious and visionary goal. For ABT, a frontrunner in the engineering world, this visit was the perfect match for their first expedition with us. It showcased how bold innovation and sustainability can shape the future. #BetterFuture #ImpactExpedition #ABT #Engineering #ClimatePositive #Inspiration
