Improving working conditions and empowering workers in the global garment industry
Over ons
Clean Clothes Campaign is a global network dedicated to improving working conditions and empowering workers in the global garment and sportswear industries. Since 1989, CCC has worked to ensure that the fundamental rights of workers are respected. We educate and mobilise consumers, lobby companies and governments, and offer direct solidarity support to workers as they fight for their rights and demand better working conditions. Clean Clothes Campaign brings together trade unions and NGOs covering a broad spectrum of perspectives and interests, such as women’s rights, consumer advocacy and poverty reduction. As a grass-roots network of hundreds of organisations, both in garment-producing and in consumer markets, we can identify local problems and objectives and transform them into global actions. We develop campaign strategies to support workers in achieving their goals. We also cooperate extensively with similar labour rights campaigns.

We stand in solidarity with the people of Bangladesh and call upon brands and other stakeholders of the garment industry in the country to ensure that garment workers are not being made to pay the price for these events: they must receive full wages for July and August and order deadlines should be extended.

For all those around the world who have a stake in the Bangladeshi garment industry, it is paramount to ensure workers are not paying the price for these events. Workers' welfare is more important than the speedy arrival of next season’s design. This means paying workers for days that factories were closed and extending delivery deadlines.

We are closely following events in Bangladesh and our thoughts are with the people of Bangladesh. We ask all of you to spare some thought and attention to what is happening and support an end of violence against peaceful protest. The violent repression by the government, which flared up again yesterday, has led to hundreds of deaths. This must stop and in the new situation arising today all killings should be investigated to provide justice for the families of those murdered. People and organisations standing up for the rights of themselves and others should be free from harassment. And all with stakes in the Bangladeshi garment industry must ensure garment workers do not pay the price for this crisis and receive their wages for the period of factory closures.
