We support our partners and friends at Cultural Emergency Response and Prince Claus Fund in the ongoing debate on budget cuts for international cultural cooperation.
Tomorrow, the Dutch government will debate cutting support for international cultural cooperation, jeopardizing vital programs that empower communities, protect heritage, and foster global solidarity. Minister Klever’s proposed restructuring of the development budget would dismantle international cultural policy, resulting in devastating consequences globally and erasing decades of impact. When culture is suppressed, we lose the ability to truly understand each other, work together and create a better future. Amidst these cuts, cultural cooperation stands as a pillar of hope, even when its value is underestimated. We believe that culture is a fundamental human need. Especially in times of crisis, culture becomes the thread that holds communities together. More than a policy, this is about people. The Netherlands has long valued cultural collaboration—now is not the time to turn away. We call for a rejection of these cuts and the reaffirmation of the Netherlands’ commitment to protecting culture as a vital force for connection and global solidarity. Culture is not an afterthought. Did you know that the Netherlands is home to five European Heritage Label sites? 🎥 Commissioned by DutchCulture, filmmaker Lourens Lente made this video of the Maastricht Treaty, the Peace Palace, the Colonies of Benevolence, Camp Westerbork, and Our Lord in the Attic Museum. These sites played an important role in European history and culture, and have been awarded the European Heritage Label for that reason. They still tell a story that transcends our borders and demonstrates European values. With the European Heritage Label, an initiative of the European Commission, the sites become part of a European network. DutchCulture supports European and international cooperation and exchange in the field of heritage and culture. 🔗 Watch the entire video at www.erfgoedlabel.eu, an initiative of DutchCulture Many thanks to: Studio Europa Maastricht Carnegie Foundation - Peace Palace / Carnegie Stichting - Vredespaleis Koloniën van Weldadigheid Nationaal Gevangenismuseum Veenhuizen Museum De Proefkolonie Herinneringscentrum Kamp Westerbork Museum Ons' Lieve Heer op Solder Jacomine Hendrikse European Heritage Label Bureau - EHL Bureau 🎬 https://lnkd.in/eWvXz2AZ

DutchCulture invited a delegation from the Caribbean part of the Kingdom to visit the Netherlands and connect with partner organisations. Cultural heritage professionals, policy makers, and a culture coach had the opportunity to engage with colonial collections related to their own islands. Together with the Colonial Collections Consortium / Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands a session was organised on restitution. Visits to Het Scheepvaartmuseum, Wereldmuseum and Nationaal Archief highlighted new narratives for exhibitions on the colonial past and slavery history. The Nationaal Slavernijmuseum & City of Amsterdam, The Black Archives, Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, Gemeente Den Haag and Boekmanstichting kindly shared their work, perspectives, and plans for future collaboration with the Caribbean part of the Kingdom. Thanks to all the institutions for their warm welcome! A special part of the programme included an online meeting with the director and museum team of Mémorial ACTe, the French national slavery museum in Guadeloupe. This visit marked the conclusion of the pilot programme for Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba, Sint Eustatius, and Sint Maarten as part of DutchCulture's Europe + Heritage programme. We are pleased to share that new collaboration opportunities with European countries (including overseas territories) are now available online on DutchCulture's website: https://lnkd.in/dPfZ8wkG
