The UN Secretary-General’s Panel on Critical Energy Transition Minerals has just released its report ‘Resourcing the Energy Transition’. As mineral demands are expected to almost triple by 2030, resource extraction will drastically accelerate to meet these demands. It is therefore crucial, the Panel states, to ‘ensure that the countries and local communities endowed with these resources are the ones to benefit the most’. To guide critical energy transition minerals towards equity and justice, the Panel proposes 7 Guiding Principles as well as 5 Actionable Recommendations that serve to embed and maintain the guiding principles. EPRM welcomes the report and especially applauds the inclusion of the Actionable Recommendation that we need to ‘empower artisanal and small-scale miners to practice responsible mining. Globally, around 45 million people make their living directly in Artisanal and Small-scale Mining (ASM), while it is estimated that another 134 to 269 million people indirectly depend on ASM through service and downstream activities. Moreover, considering the adverse effects and opportunities for development that are associated with ASM, as well as its current and future contributions to mineral supply chains, attention to responsible ASM is key. Driving the responsible production by and sourcing from artisanal and small-scale mining is at the heart of our work. EPRM supports responsible ASM through the various projects we fund and facilitates increased access to formal markets for ASM operations. Moreover, we enable artisanal and small-scale miners to participate and be heard in policy and decision-making circles. As a unique multi-stakeholder initiative, the EPRM looks forward to engaging with the Panel’s principles and recommendations, to continue our collaboration with members and partners, and to further support responsible ASM.
