🚀 Successful Pilot Project: A Breakthrough Bioplastics Production from waste fabric 🌱 🚀 Successful Pilot Project: A Breakthrough Bioplastics Production from Waste Fabric 🌱 We are thrilled to announce a major milestone in our journey toward a sustainable economy! In collaboration with The Biomimicry Institute, Circle Economy, BioFashionTech, TNO, Erdotex Group, supported by the Laudes Foundation, EV Biotech has successfully completed a pilot project that demonstrates the potential of converting mixed textile waste into valuable bioplastics, proving the efficacy of cutting-edge biotechnology. website: https://lnkd.in/epypkmWk BioFashionTech, created an enzymatic hydrolysis process to break down cellulose from textile waste, transforming it into glucose—Glucose is a key feedstock for producing PHA, a biodegradable polymer. EV Biotech has proven that this complex glucose waste stream can successfully be utilised by both natural and engineered PHA producing microbes to produce this Bioplastic. This innovation not only diverts waste from landfills or incineration which is environmentally harmful, so it's not only creating a new revenue stream, but also reducing a 'pollution stream' for industries grappling with unsellable waste. This pilot not only underscores our commitment to driving the bioeconomy forward but also provides a compelling proof point for the potential and viability of our technology. As we look ahead, we're excited to expand these efforts, partnering with innovators in biomaterials to further refine and deploy sustainable solutions. 🔬 Key Takeaways: Cost-Effective Recycling: Transforming waste from a cost centre to a profit centre. Biocompatible Outputs: PHA production from waste-derived glucose. Sustainability at Scale: Proven pathways for large-scale bioplastic production. This success is just the beginning. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to innovate and lead in the sustainable biotechnological revolution! 🌍 #Biotech #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #Bioplastics #Innovation #EVBiotech #Bioeconomy #WasteToValue #BiofashionTech

Just in: less than 5% of used clothing imported into Ghana is considered "waste" 🇬🇭 A new report by the Ghana Used Clothing Dealers Association (GUCDA) challenges the narrative of "waste colonialism" by highlighting the positive economic impact of the second-hand clothing trade in Ghana. The report is particularly compelling because it incorporates the voices of over 1,000 second-hand clothing stakeholders. 🟢 The trade generated an estimated $29.5 million in government revenue in 2022, more than double the amount spent on Ghana's key poverty reduction program. This demonstrates the significant financial contribution of the second-hand clothing trade to the Ghanaian government and its potential to support social programs. 🟢 It employs approximately 2.5 million people, making it a major source of employment and livelihoods. The second-hand clothing trade provides essential income and economic opportunities for a significant portion of the Ghanaian population. 🟢 73% of second-hand clothing traders in Accra reported that 0-4% of the clothing they import is waste, demonstrating that the vast majority of clothing imported into Ghana is reused or recycled. 56% reported 1% or less waste in their bales. This challenges the misconception that most imported clothing ends up as waste and highlights the circularity of the trade. 🟢 The second-hand clothing trade in Ghana is a $164 million industry, highlighting its significant economic impact. This substantial market value underscores the trade's importance in the overall Ghanaian economy. 🟢 92% of second-hand clothing retailers in Accra rely on the trade as their primary source of income, emphasizing its importance for livelihoods. The trade plays a crucial role in supporting the economic well-being of numerous individuals and families in Accra. The report highlights the potential of the second-hand clothing trade to contribute to a circular economy, where clothes are reused and recycled instead of being thrown away. This report resonated with me; as someone who lived and studied in Ghana over the period of several years, I learned that understanding circularity problems (for me, that was plastic waste) requires deep, on-the-ground engagement with participants across the entire value chain. While this report is promising, it is important to note that it is just one study, and more research is needed to fully understand the economic and environmental impacts of the second-hand clothing trade in Ghana and more broadly. However, the GUCDA report provides valuable insights into the potential of this trade to contribute to a more sustainable and equitable future for Ghana. The fourth edition of Challenge the Fabric 2024 in Milan Yesterday The Erdotex Group was invited by Accelerating Circularity to sit on a panel and facilitate a workshop on MMCF. My first time at this event that felt informal with interesting people old and new talking about the alternative feedstocks that are necessary to reach the future targets to make MMCF. The challenges mentioned out there like how to improve global legislation, create better access to the large amounts of Post industrial & Post & Pre- Consumer waste and is #agriculturalwaste an additional alternative? The reduction of using woodpulp as a feedstock in a sustainable way was at the heart of many conversations. Companies like ARAUCO and Sappi who have great solutions were present either as speaker or on a panel. All stakeholders where there also the brands like Ganni A/S sharing their road to circularity were on board. Eastman, TOMRA, Fashion for Good, Ganni A/S, PUMA Group, UN Environment Programme and many more. Many of these questions and challenges where discussed and of course we cannot solve it at this event, but the vibe was there! A great event to attend next year! Thank you to the organisers of this wonderful event: Swedish Fashion Council & Ekman Group and all the sponsors. #MMCF #Circularity #Collectors #sorters #recyclers #circularity #sustainability

💚🌍 #textielrecycling #duurzaamheid #samensterk https://lnkd.in/ei_7_-3h

Director Sustainable Finance & Circular Economy Lead

To get a better understanding of circular textiles and to learn what happens with your textile waste after putting it in the textile bins, our Sustainable Finance team visited Erdotex Group in Ridderkerk. Erdotex has over 30 years of experience in collection, sorting and revaluing of used textiles, so there is a lot to learn from them! During the day, we deep-dived into the fascinating world of collecting and sorting textile waste. Our hosts Marieke Koemans-Kokkelink and Edwin van Toledo talked with great passion about the importance of proper sorting, sorting for reuse and sorting for recycling, recent market developments, the role of the different players in the textile value chain and what's needed to make it a more circular one. We also experienced the sorting ourselves, as our hosts tested our skills to sort textile waste based on a.o. composition, quality or potential markets for reuse. And if you put your shoes in the textile bin, don't forget to tie them together ;-)! Thank you so much Marieke and Edwin for this really insightful afternoon! #sustainabefinance #circulareconomy #circulartextiles Julia Schell Victor van der Velde
