📣 🌟Newsletter from the HELIOS Consortium🌟 On behalf of the entire HELIOS consortium, we are pleased to welcome you to our project newsletter of June 2024. HELIOS, funded by the EU and supported by the Commission's Clean Hydrogen Partnership, is committed to reducing CO2 emissions in power generation by advancing hydrogen combustion technology in gas turbines. Our project brings together leading institutions from across Europe to enable low NOx combustion of hydrogen-enriched fuel, utilizing the innovative FlameSheet™ technology. This technology will retrofit existing gas turbines, allowing for high-hydrogen, low-NOx combustion, and resulting in electricity generation with no carbon emissions—only water. We invite you to join us on this exciting journey. Please remain informed about our progress and upcoming events of the HELIOS project. For more information, visit our website or connect with us on LinkedIn.
Over ons
The Clean Hydrogen Partnership project #HELIOS will develop the needed technology for hydrogen combustion as a retrofit solution based on the FlameSheet™ combustor. Essential for this approach is a sound fundamental understanding of hydrogen combustion, combined with advanced numerical modelling techniques and measurement techniques of hydrogen combustion in a full-size combustor. This is essential to boost the required technological developments for utilization of hydrogen-enriched natural gas with the FlameSheet™ combustor. The #HELIOS project will start at the gas-turbine testing using the FlameSheet™ combustor at well-defined lab conditions (TRL 4) and will reach realistic conditions in a relevant environment (TRL 6) by the end of the project. #HELIOS is coordinated by Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (NL) and involves participants from three EU countries. The other participants are Thomassen Energy B.V. (NL), Centro Combustione Ambiente Spa (IT), Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt EV (DE), Technische Universiteit Delft (NL). The project is supported by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership and its members.

📣 HELIOS project partner CCA presented work at Turbo Expo conference The 2024 edition of the Turbo Expo Turbomachinery Technical Conference & Exposition, organized by ASME (The American Society of Mechanical Engineers), took place at the modern London ExCeL Exhibition Center from June 24 to 28. This conference, one of the major event in the gas turbine sector, covered not only the technical and scientific aspects but also the socio-economic dimensions of the energy transition and decarbonization process. Turbo Expo 2024 highlighted crucial discussions on achieving a zero-impact future in propulsion and power generation. Experts presented promising advancements in using high concentrations of hydrogen as fuels for gas turbines, with many sessions dedicated to cutting-edge research on flame dynamics, featuring both experimental and numerical high-level presentations. Our HELIOS project partner Centro Combustione Ambiente (CCA) participated in this year's conference, and Antonio Ferrante presented the paper, "Real-time, spatially resolved methodology for flame dynamics investigation by means of fast imaging and image processing". This methodology, developed in the CCA laboratories, is now enhanced to provide real-time results during characterization campaigns of gas turbine burners. This groundbreaking work is part of the HELIOS Project, funded by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership. 👏 Kudos Antonio Ferrante and the entire CCA team for their innovative contributions to the field! #HELIOS #TurboExpo2024 #ASME #EnergyTransition #Decarbonization #GasTurbines #HydrogenFuel #FlameDynamics #Innovation #CleanEnergy #CentroCombustioneAmbiente

🔬🚀 Impressive research update on hydrogen flashback by the HELIOS team 🌟 We’re excited to announce our latest results on flame flashback in hydrogen combustion, a crucial area for advancing sustainable energy. Our small-scale experimental study by Rafael Pichler at the Delft University of Technology leverages cutting-edge experimental data to understand and prevent flashbacks, to be avoided in hydrogen combustion systems. This video shows the flashback phenomena of a methane-hydrogen flame in a small-scale experiment. The outcome of this study lays the groundwork for use of these experimental data in numerical models and finally also at large-scale combustion applications, providing valuable insights that will enhance the safety and efficiency of hydrogen-powered technologies. This research is a vital step towards scaling up to large-scale combustion applications, providing the insights needed to enhance the safety and efficiency of hydrogen energy technologies. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to push the boundaries of sustainable energy solutions! 📣 Excited to share the third General Assembly meeting in the HELIOS project! Yesterday we held our third live meeting, kindly hosted by Antonio Ferrante and Alessandro Saponaro of Centro Combustione Ambiente Spa (CCA), located in Gioia del Colle, Italy. During the meeting on April 10, 2024, our project partners came together to share updates on the developments of hydrogen-based gas turbines and discussed their progress. It was a productive event where we established a solid foundation for the upcoming tasks in the HELIOS project. Coordinated by the Eindhoven University of Technology, the HELIOS project aims to develop the necessary technology for hydrogen combustion as a retrofit solution based on Thomassen Energy BV's existing combustor concept, FlameSheetTM. A deep understanding of hydrogen combustion, advanced numerical modeling techniques, and precise measurement techniques in a full-size combustor are crucial for our approach. This will ultimately boost technological developments for utilizing hydrogen in gas turbines. This project is supported by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership. Our project partners, Eindhoven University of Technology, Thomassen Energy BV, CENTRO COMBUSTIONE AMBIENTE S.R.L., German Aerospace Center (DLR), and Delft University of Technology are committed to advancing this innovative project. Please stay tuned to our LinkedIn page for the latest updates on our progress. #Hydrogen, Hydrogen Europe Research, #CleanHydrogenPartnership, #CleanEnergy #HELIOS #TUe #HydrogenTechnology #Sustainability #Innovation

🔥 Exciting News from EPHyC Conference! 🔥 We're thrilled to share our experience from the inaugural European PhD Hydrogen Conference (EPHyC - European PhD Hydrogen Conference), held from March 20th to 22nd, 2024, in Ghent, Belgium. Organized by BE-HyFE and Hydrogen Europe Research. This pioneering event brought together EU-based PhD researchers, exclusively focusing on hydrogen-related research topics. At the conference, the HELIOS project proudly showcased its groundbreaking work through our Thermo-Fluids Engineering (TFE) at TU Eindhoven PhD Student, Stijn Schepers. Stijn presented some preliminary results from his hydrogen flame simulations, offering a glimpse into the future of advanced combustion technologies. Within the HELIOS project, Eindhoven University of Technology is dedicated to making significant advancements in its combustion models. Our goal is to optimize these models for 100% hydrogen combustion, as well as various mixtures of natural gas and hydrogen, under gas turbine conditions. Our approach combines cutting-edge techniques such as large eddy simulations and the Flamelet Generated Manifold (#FGM) model, aiming to streamline computational efforts while ensuring accuracy and reliability. Validation of these models will be paramount, and we're leveraging extensive datasets from experiments to refine our simulations. By pushing the boundaries of combustion science, we're not just advancing technology; we're driving the transition towards cleaner, more sustainable energy solutions. The results at EPHyC was just the beginning, and we're excited to continue this journey towards a hydrogen-powered future. #EPHyC, #Hydrogen, Hydrogen Europe Research, Clean Hydrogen Partnership, #CleanEnergy #HELIOS #TUe #FGM #HydrogenTechnology #Sustainability #Innovation
Last week, I had the opportunity to present my research at EPHyC - European PhD Hydrogen Conference in Gent, Belgium 🇧🇪 I touched upon the goal and purpose of the HELIOS project and presented some of my first preliminary hydrogen flame simulations 🔥.
