But how to prioritize your backlog as a Pharma marketeer in such a way that you deliver these solid business outcomes? In a world with limited marketing resources and conflicting priorities, where stakeholders want it all and want it yesterday, how can you do the right work at the right time? Don Reinertsen, an Agile Thought leader argues that if you want to get the maximum business value from a given size marketing team, you should focus on the work items with the highest value of urgency (or Cost of Delay). Analyzing Cost of Delay is important because it focuses on the business value of marketing; understanding it is essential if you want to maximize the value of marketing. With a CoD metric we’re putting a price tag on time: how much money you lose (per unit of time) due to a delay in launching your marketing campaign. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝘁? We will not delve into exact formulas here, but the good news is that you don’t need to be able to precisely predict the cost of delay in order to make better and more strategic decisions by using it. The mere practice of estimating Cost of Delay is a catalyst for important conversations that wouldn’t otherwise happen if the focus is merely on ‘production speed’ and not ‘the Waste of Waiting’.
