GOAL 3 IMPALA: A sustainable patient monitoring system for understaffed health facilities in Africa. We All Health.
Over ons
GOAL 3 develops durable and easy to use patient monitoring systems for environments with limited resources. Through predictive algorithms we enable health workers to detect acute illnesses when they can still be treated. GOAL 3's vision is: We All Health The right to health is universal. We are all equal and every person should have access to healthcare irrespective of individual characteristics, race, religion or geography. Therefore, it is unacceptable that millions of people die every year from conditions which can be treated easily. Fighting this injustice is what motivates us and what keeps us up at night. The mission is to make healthcare fair and accessible for everyone. To achieve this mission, we identify and develop data-driven health technologies from a perspective of collaboration and fair-data. These technologies are combined into an integrated and easy-to-use digital tool for health workers. This will enable health workers to provide better care and improve health for all.

It was an inspiring and productive week, filled with meetings with NGOs, funders, and government officials. 📊 Our research on how IMPALA helps lower pediatric and neonatal mortality rates, while reducing the workload on healthcare staff, was well-received. We’re excited by the Ministry’s support, the enthusiasm from hospitals to improve care, and the strong interest from funders to invest in scaling IMPALA across the country. 📌 There’s still work to do, but this trip was a big step toward our goal of bringing real-time patient monitoring and better healthcare outcomes to every hospital in Malawi. 📷 Thank you, Anda Nindi and Pacharo Matchere from Seed Global Health—it was great connecting and sharing our shared missions! #HealthcareInnovation #MedTech #SDG3 #MalawiHealthcare #GOAL3 #IMPALA #HealthcareTransformation

IMPALA’s impact felt immediately in Rwanda! 🙌 Read the story below. 👩🏽🔬🧑🏾🔬In August GOAL 3 received full regulatory approval to operate in Rwanda. By the beginning of September our team members Eline Pieck-KleinJan and Kayumba Darius were in Rwanda implementing 32 new IMPALA monitors in multiple hospitals. 🏥 And by mid-end September the IMPALA system was being used in full operation. Just over one month from approval to full operation in hospitals – and the impact of the IMPALA system in action was felt immediately! Here is a story from Rwamagana Hospital in Rwanda just days after installation: 👶🏽 "𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘙𝘸𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘯𝘢 𝘪𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘱𝘶𝘵 𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘺 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘴. Another major milestone! The Tanzania Medicines and Medical Devices Authority (TMDA) has approved the IMPALA system! 🎉 📜 We recently received the official certificate from the TMDA approving the IMPALA system for commercial use in Tanzania! This was just weeks after we received it in Rwanda. With full certification to operate in Rwanda and Tanzania, GOAL 3 is now primed and ready to scale up in these countries. 👩🏾⚕️ Back in the beginning of June we presented GOAL 3 at the World Health Assembly side event where the the Tanzanian 🇹🇿 Minister of Health was present. Recognizing the potential of GOAL 3’s IMPALA system, GOAL 3 was invited to scale up in Tanzania. 🥳 And now that invite can turn into a reality. 💡 We are so excited to continue to grow within Tanzania, the country where our CEO and co-founder Niek Versteegde first came up with the initial ideas for GOAL 3 while working there as a Tropical Doctor. 🏥 We are so proud of our team, and everyone involved in the IMPALA project for all the work it took to make this happen. Now let’s see IMPALA continue to help save lives across Sub-Saharan Africa!

GOAL 3 received a 260K grant from Founders Pledge and its community for potential exceptional cost effectiveness! 🎉 💰 Founders Pledge is an organization that works with entrepreneurs who ‘pledge’ a certain amount of their shares and/or profit to high-impact organizations. 🔬 Because giving to impactful organizations is at the core of what they do, Founders Pledge performs a thorough research and vetting process for all organizations they support, only donating to organizations with (the potential of) immense impact, and well, GOAL 3 fit the description. 👶🏽 Our early results show a 42% reduction in child mortality compared to the same period a year before implementation of the IMPALA System. Based on these pilot results, IMPALA has a cost effectiveness of approximately $208 per life saved, making it potentially up to 20x more cost effective than leading global health interventions like anti-malaria nets and vitamin A supplements! 👩🏽🔬 We will use the grant to perform further research in Rwanda and Malawi to further strengthen the evidence of IMPALA’s impact, accelerating the scale-up of the IMPALA System across Africa. 🏥 We are exceptionally grateful to Founders Pledge and its community for their trust and for awarding us this grant, and we know that with it, many more health workers will be empowered, and lives will be saved. WOOHOO! 🎉 GOAL 3 is celebrating its 5th year! 🥳 🎂 This past week GOAL 3 turned 5 years old! In that time GOAL 3 has done a lot. From our humble beginnings as a tiny startup, to the growth and explosion of saving hundreds of lives and being one of the most cost-effective solutions in the world. 👶🏽 It has been a wild ride, one that has been characterized by a grit and determination to empower health workers and put an end to the nearly 5 million preventable child deaths that occur every year. Some highlights of our first 5 years: ➡️ A massive crowdfunding campaign that kickstarted the development of IMPALA. ➡️ Appearing on TV in Dragons Den in the Netherlands with 1 million+ viewers. ➡️ Winning the EU EDCTP Grant that kicked off Project IMPALA with our partners. ➡️ Patient zero of IMPALA in Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Malawi. ➡️ The release of an updated IMPALA System with partner ManGo Product Design. ➡️ Our first implementation outside of a research context in St Luke's Hospital, Malawi. ➡️ Achieving amazing pilot results showing a 42% reduction in patient mortality, and a reduction in admission time. ➡️ Winning various grants and awards like the EU humanitarian and IF Design Award. ➡️ Seeing our team grow to more than 20 staff, and tackle the challenges that have been placed before them. 👩🏾⚕️We are incredibly proud of all we have accomplished, but we know that this is only the tip of the iceberg. There are so many more healthcare facilities to reach, so many more healthcare workers to empower, and so many more patients in need of high quality care. 👏We thank you for supporting us through our first five years and we look forward to what the next 5 years and more will bring! P.S Not yet following us on LinkedIn? Be sure to follow our page to stay up to date with all GOAL 3 is doing. 👍 P.P.S. GOAL 3 is expanding its impact in Rwanda! 🎉We are implementing the IMPALA System in 3 hospitals! 🥳 🔬 Eline Pieck-KleinJan is in Rwanda for 3 weeks working alongside our study coordinator Kayumba Darius and our partners Rwanda Pediatric Association to implement IMPALA in 3 hospitals – Nyamata, Rwamagana, and CHUK. 👩🏾⚕️The implementations are already underway with the first two training groups at the Nyamata hospital complete. The staff are very enthusiastic about IMPALA and immediately see its application. As one health worker put it: “𝘞𝘦 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘐𝘔𝘗𝘈𝘓𝘈 𝘴𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘥𝘦𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘭𝘰𝘢𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘵 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘦𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴, 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 [𝘯𝘰𝘸] 𝘸𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘷𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴." 👶🏽 The implementation of IMPALA in these hospitals will not only help with continuous monitoring, but will also provide a history of vital signs for patients. This enables the healthcare workers to not only respond to emergencies, but also to spot and act upon deteriorating trends in the vital signs over time. 🏥 It is amazing to experience the excitement the health workers have for the technology and the eagerness they have to improve the quality of care within their hospitals. It really brings to life our mission: To enable and empower health workers to improve access to high quality of care. Would you like to stay up to date with the work GOAL 3 is doing? See the IMPALA System in action in Malawi! 📹 👶🏽 Our partners Amref Malawi made a documentary about the implementation of the IMPALA System in Mchinji District, Malawi. Together with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, Amref Health Africa in Malawi, and local partner Elite Biomedical Engineering Limited 23 patient monitors were installed in Kapiri and Mchinji hospitals in early spring. More than 3,600 babies are expected to receive improved care as a result of this implementation. 👩🏾⚕️ In this short 6.5 minute documentary you get to witness the GOAL 3 IMPALA Monitors in daily use, and meet empowered health workers and thankful patients whose lives the IMPALA System has changed. “𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘣𝘢𝘣𝘺 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘨𝘢𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸𝘭𝘦𝘥𝘨𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘦 𝘢𝘤𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘮𝘳𝘦𝘧 [𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘎𝘖𝘈𝘓 3] 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘴, 𝘸𝘦 𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘶𝘴𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘣𝘢𝘣𝘺, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 [𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘢𝘣𝘺] 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘴𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘥. Our impact in Malawi is growing! 🎉 We are implementing the IMPALA System in another hospital! 🥳 🏥 This week our GOAL 3 Malawi team are at Thyolo District Hospital in Malawi, installing 15 new monitors! 👩🏾⚕️ Our team is helping train 75 health workers on the system, and by the end of the week, the staff will be fully equipped to begin saving lives using the IMPALA System. The monitors will be installed in various wards including: ➡️ 10 in the pediatric ward ➡️ 3 in the main HDU ➡️ 1 in the male ward ➡️ 1 in the female ward 👩🏿💻 The health workers will also receive two tablets, providing a central overview of the wards and helping them be more proactive in their care. These will be placed in the pediatric ward and the HDU. Our implementation manager Alice Likumbo reported: “[𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨] 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘢 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘐𝘔𝘗𝘈𝘓𝘈 𝘚𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨.
