What a fantastic start for the High Seas at #COP16Colombia! Last night, we co-hosted a reception with IUCN to raise awareness about why the High Seas matter and how the Treaty can protect marine biodiversity. 🙏 Thank you to everyone who attended and supported the #RaceForRatification at #COP16 Colombia. The High Seas Alliance team will stay active throughout CBD COP16, emphasizing the essential role of High Seas action in biodiversity efforts. We’ll be co-hosting events to drive this message forward: https://lnkd.in/eMZ2ma6Y #ForTheOcean #NatureIsAlsoBlue #BBNJ

🌊 #COP16Colombia is in full swing, and the High Seas Alliance is actively working to ensure that the world’s ocean biodiversity remains at the forefront of global conservation efforts. Our participation here in Cali, Colombia, marks an important step toward achieving the goals of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (#KMGBF) and advancing protections for the #HighSeas. We’re calling on leaders to recognise that #NatureIsAlsoBlue and that ocean ecosystems are vital to maintaining biodiversity, tackling climate change, and achieving sustainable development. This week, we are engaging in discussions, panels, and advocacy to emphasise that effective marine conservation is essential to a healthy planet. Follow us for updates as we work to protect the High Seas and drive the #RaceForRatification forward. 📌Yesterday, on our first in-person session of #00B24 (Our ocean bootcamp) we dived deep into the importance of the High Seas Treaty also known as Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) refers to the global agreement aimed at protecting marine biodiversity in high seas, which is the area beyond national jurisdiction. 📌These waters covers nearly two-thirds of our oceans. yet they've been largely unregulated, leading to overfishing, pollution, and loss of precious marine life as it is "considered as common heritage of mankind".💙🌊 📌The high seas are vital for maintaining the health of marine ecosystems, which in turn support food security, regulate climate, and sustain millions of livelihoods globally. This treaty is a massive leap toward conserving marine biodiversity and ensuring the sustainable use of ocean resources for generations to come. 📌Why Do We Need Ratification? Ratification makes this treaty legally binding. Without it, the treaty remains just an agreement without real power. Each country's commitment is key to enforcing the protections and regulations needed for the high seas. It's not just about signing; it's about turning words into action. 📌We as Tanzanian and African youth have a critical role in driving the conversation forward through raising awareness by Sharing the importance of the treaty on social media, at community events, or through blogs and webinars and also by joining Global Movements by getting involved with international organizations pushing for ocean protection, ensuring Africa's voice is heard. 📌Together, we can ensure our oceans and their vital ecosystems are protected for the future. ➡️Special thanks to SOA TANZANIA for this opportunity and Madam Hellen Kuria for such an incredible speech. 📽️ New Video from the event "High Ambition for the High Seas - Accelerating Political Momentum for ratification and implementation of the High Seas Treaty" hosted on 24th September 2024 at the 79th UN General Assembly during Climate Week NYC. At the time of the event, 8 nations had ratified the Treaty. That figure has since climbed to 13 (as of 27 September) as political momentum grows. We spoke with Lisa Speer, Director of the International Ocean Program at Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), who emphasized the urgency of securing 60 ratifications for the High Seas Treaty by June 2025. During the interview, Lisa also highlighted Chile's announcement during the event of an exciting new high-level initiative to advance the first generation of High Seas MPAs. The Treaty is critical for establishing High Seas Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) to protect 30% of the ocean by 2030. 🚨 New white paper🌊 "Governing Marine Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction: Roles and Opportunities for the Private Sector". Ocean areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ) are one of the great remaining commons of the planet and critical to sustaining life on Earth, as they represent two-thirds of the ocean, are home to millions of unidentified species and play a critical role in absorbing heat, storing excess CO2, and sustaining global ecosystems. But they do even more: these areas are also crossed by 90% of global trade, host critical data communications infrastructure and contribute to food security. The United Nations Agreement on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ), adopted in 2023, is currently being signed and ratified internationally. Private sector actors are likely to be among those most affected by the Agreement’s provisions once it enters into force. To increase the likelihood of successful implementation, we will need an “all hands on deck” approach, cross-sectoral action and expertise. This paper reports the views of 14 leading companies, from sectors including fisheries, international shipping and subsea cables, and presents four high-level recommendations for the implementation of the BBNJ Agreement https://lnkd.in/gjPUK7jC Katherine Crosman Silvia Guzzini Alfredo Giron Nava Peter Thomson Sanda Ojiambo World Economic Forum United Nations Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of The Sea (UNDOALOS) #BBNJ #BBNJAgreement #MarineBiodiversity #BlueEconomy #Ocean #ClimateWeekNYC #UNGA #RaceForRatification #SDIM24
