The Brazilian industry must also decarbonize. Not only to be CO2 neutral by 2050, but also to be efficient and competitive and to be able to export to, for example, the European Union. Here scope 3 is especially complicated: those are the emissions produced not by the company itself, but by companies in its supply-chain. This supply-chain is harder to control and often consists of smaller enterprises. The Innovatie Attaché Netwerk / IA (Netherlands Innovation Network) attended the launch of a program called "Jornada de Descarbonização", journey to decarbonization. This programs aims specifically at small and medium-sized enterprises. Individually, these are not major producers of CO2, but together they are responsible for many scope 3 emissions. Companies affiliated with Fiesp - Federação das Indústrias do Estado de São Paulo, São Paulo's industry umbrella organization, are offered a package to reduce their emissions. After an inventory of how many gases are emitted, a plan is made to reduce these emissions. To do so, Senai São Paulo and Sebrae-SP offer advice, online training and an online platform. Then, through Desenvolve SP, the company can apply for a credit to implement this plan. In this way, the industry itself ensures that emissions are reduced and that it remains efficient and competitive. Jens K. Daniël Burgers Robert Thijssen Tijmen Steensma

[#CIRCULARITY] Composites are sustainable materials and essential for realising the European Green Deal’s net-zero targets. Using the latest information and examples, EuCIA can also now demonstrate that #composites are truly #circular #materials. 🔷 Over the coming months we will share our knowledge on composites circularity through a series of articles, accompanied by in-depth publications in our new Knowledge Hub. 🔷 We will also outline our vision for advancing circular solutions, which aims to facilitate the building of a robust, Europe-wide supply chain for the sustainable management of end-of-life composite materials and parts. 🔷 To achieve this objective, cross-sector cooperation is crucial, and we will discuss the need for establishing a stakeholder #alliance. ♻️♻️♻️ Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) has been front and centre at this year’s World Circular Economy Forum #WCEF2024 in Brussels ❗️It was great discussing the role of EPR in the transition to #CircularEconomy and sharing our experiences and expertise in this space ❓So, what impact does EPR have, you ask? This OECD report analyses all things EPR in more detail 👇 💡 The long-standing experience with EPR (in some product groups 30-50 years) shows that, it has successfully contributed to: 🟢 Improvements in transparency regarding material and financial flows 🟢 Shift of end-of-life (EoL) management costs of products from local governments to producers and consumers, whilst ensuring dedicated, ongoing and sufficient funding 🟢 Increases in the volume of separate collection of waste, where this is beneficial 🟢 Increases in material recovery (e.g. recycling) rates 💡 Additionally, EPR has the potential to provide producers with incentives for the design of more easily recyclable or re-useable products. 💡 However, to create effective product design incentives there is a need for careful modulation of EPR fees (based on product characteristics), something that has emerged only relatively recently in some European, Latin American and North American EPR systems. 💡 EPR policy development has thus far been an iterative process, and governments continue to trial innovative policies that are expanding the reach of the EPR approach. The current regulations emphasize mechanical recycling, but manufacturers must take further action. Early education on #segregation and #recycling is crucial, and municipalities, as #waste #management hubs, need funding for advanced #technology. - Mr Janardhanan Ramanujalu, Chairman, CII Conference on Sustainability Plastics; and Vice President, South Asia, SABIC at #CIIConferenceonSustainablePlastics. We are in the process to set our scope 3 targets in line with SBTi and will define our emission reduction targets for outgoing transports this year. Transports is a larger part of our scope 3 emissions, but when looking at the totality our main emissions are in the production and transports account for a very small part compared to that. We have been working with different methodologies for calculation our CO2 emissions, and most recently we are building a way to calculate emissions and track them in a more continuously manner. This to be able to work towards making decisions also based on carbon emissions and in the long-term also to include it in operations and decision making at that level. As of now the management of sustainability data is rather manual and require manual work for calculations, but here we see that digitalization and tools can support this. This is also evident for optimization efforts such as route optimization and co-loading/consolidation. “We are building a way to calculate emissions to be able to work towards making decisions also based on carbon emissions.” - Johan Dahlberg, Director Supply Chain Europe SSAB Find out more in the playbook: https://lnkd.in/dWjybUEM
