Real-time leak localization in water distribution networks

Over ons

HULO's mission is to provide a globally affordable solution to improve water supplies and to reduce NRW by doing it the smart way, 'together' with our clients. We believe that developing knowledge together with our clients is most beneficial for a sustainable and future proof water supply. A lot of black-box and off the shelves solutions are offered these days to the water sector. With these solutions, the knowledge about what is really happening stays at the commercial companies selling these smart algorithms. HULO is different. We do this by developing smart algorithms, together with independent research institutes. These independent research institutes continuously receive questions from the water companies and therefore help us to specify these needs and develop the solutions for these needs. We develop algorithms to design and optimize a network (wsensor positioning) and to detect, localize and categorize leakages. Since we do this based on the needs of our customers, it allows us to make a specific solution for every client. This solution works in the system of the client, which allows them to understand it and learn from it. info@hulo.ai

Understanding water balance in distribution systems Effective water management starts with a deep understanding of the water balance within distribution systems. This means tracking water from its source all the way to consumption, while identifying both real and apparent losses. For utilities, mastering this balance is key to maximizing resource efficiency and sustainability. While the Netherlands has commendably low leakage rates, further improvements are always possible. Losses in water systems aren't just about visible leaks. Apparent losses, such as inaccuracies in metering, errors in data handling, and even unauthorized consumption, play a significant role in the overall picture of Non-Revenue Water (NRW). These invisible challenges often go unnoticed but can represent a considerable portion of the water that doesn’t generate revenue for utilities. Traditional leak detection methods, while effective in many cases, often struggle to distinguish between real and apparent losses. Complex distribution networks, combined with issues like metering inaccuracies, can hinder precise water loss management. At HULO.ai, we’re focused on these subtle yet impactful challenges. By continuously monitoring water flow and applying advanced data analysis, we detect anomalies and reduce not just visible leaks, but also the often-overlooked apparent losses. Our approach paves the way for more effective water management, helping utilities around the world safeguard this precious resource 🌍💧. #WaterManagement #Innovation #DataAnalysis #HULO #SustainableWater #TechSolutions Andy Lurling Meron Mekonnen LUMO Labs Sybo Zijlstra NV NOM Wetsus, European Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Water Technology WaterCampus Water Alliance

HULO.ai in #Oman! 💧 Hydroinformatic Engineer Laura Garzon Useche and Frank van der Hulst, our co-founder, have spent four days in Oman for our project as a subcontractor of Witteveen+Bos at Nama Group, in collaboration with Blue Gold Technology. They have been leading workshops related to the project we’re working on. The project focuses on implementing innovative technologies for Non-Revenue Water (#NRW) reduction. HULO’s technology is key in saving valuable time when detecting and finding new leaks—reducing both the duration of leaks and the time required for leak localization. The total approach of real-time monitoring (HULO), consultative experts (Witteveen+Bos) and field expertise (BlueGold Technology) enables water loss control, finding both existing as new leaks. We’re proud to be part of this initiative and look forward to the impact we can make together. #NRWReduction #WaterManagement #Innovation #HULO #Oman #Collaboration Andy Lurling Meron Mekonnen LUMO Labs Sybo Zijlstra NV NOM Michel Bretveld Jeremy Llewellyn Chris Smith Teeba Al-Harrasi

Understanding the Water Cycle and Climate Change's impact Water constantly moves through the water cycle, existing in the atmosphere, on land, in oceans, and underground. However, climate change is profoundly disrupting this cycle. Rising sea levels, driven by melting polar ice caps and glaciers, are altering ocean currents and weather patterns, affecting global precipitation and evaporation rates. Climate change also increases the frequency of floods and droughts. Higher surface temperatures accelerate evaporation, leading to drier, harder soils that are less permeable. As a result, more water runs off into streams and rivers instead of soaking into the ground, degrading soil quality, reducing agricultural productivity, and causing water bodies to become turbid with sediment. Changes in soil conditions, such as those caused by climate change, can damage pipes and increase the amount of leaks due to soil erosion, shifting, and hardening. When soil becomes drier and harder, it loses its ability to absorb water, leading to increased surface runoff and erosion. This erosion can expose and stress buried pipes, causing cracks and breaks. Additionally, shifting soils can lead to misalignment and pressure points on pipes, further increasing the likelihood of leaks. In light of these issues, how can technology, like the AI-driven solutions we’re developing at HULO, help mitigate the impact of climate change? By improving leak detection. Fast leak detection can increase the resilience of water utilities and help them in the challenges caused by climate change. Could this also be part of the solution to the broader challenges posed by climate change? We invite you to share your thoughts on how technology can help us adapt to and mitigate these impacts. #ClimateChange #WaterManagement #AI #Innovation #Sustainability #HULO
