Over ons
Founded on 29 September 1999, the International Society for Applied Phycology or ISAP is a non-profit organisation that supports microalgal and macroalgal (seaweed) research, algal biotechnology, preservation of algal genotypes, and the dissemination of knowledge on how we can apply and utilise algae all around the world. In order to meet these objectives, ISAP promotes the following activities: - Organises triennial meetings, encouraging wide participation from academia and industry. - Forms an informed source of expertise among members who could provide an accurate, disinterested opinion. concerning algal products or relating to environmental impact. - Forms links and affiliations with existing national and regional organizations of applied phycology. - Promotes exchange of students and researchers. - Applies for special grants and donations from international bodies, governments and industry to support activities of the Society. - Issues an electronic newsletter to publicise activities. - Organizes workshops and training programs. - Supports culture collections of algae. - Organizes exhibitions of commercial algal products and similar pertinent

In Memoriam: Dr. Thierry B.R. Chopin (1959–2024) Dr. Thierry B.R. Chopin, a distinguished Canadian phycologist and advocate for sustainable aquaculture, passed away on July 18, 2024. His legacy reverberates through the scientific community, where he made significant contributions to integrated multitrophic aquaculture (IMTA). Born in 1947, Dr. Chopin dedicated his life to understanding marine ecosystems and promoting environmentally responsible practices. His research focused on IMTA, a holistic approach that combines various species—such as seaweed, mussels, and fish—in a synergistic system. By harnessing the natural interactions between these organisms, IMTA aims to minimize environmental impact while maximizing productivity. Throughout his career, Dr. Chopin championed the cultivation of seaweed alongside finfish and shellfish. He believed that IMTA could revolutionize aquaculture by creating balanced ecosystems that mimic nature. His work extended beyond academia; he collaborated with industry partners, policymakers, and coastal communities to implement sustainable practices. Dr. Chopin’s impact extended globally. He advised governments, authored influential publications, and mentored countless students. His passion for the oceans was contagious, inspiring others to safeguard our marine resources. As we bid farewell to this visionary scientist, let us honour his memory by continuing the pursuit of sustainable aquaculture. Dr. Thierry B.R. Chopin leaves behind a legacy of innovation, compassion, and dedication to our planet’s blue heart. ________________________________________ May his legacy inspire future generations to protect our oceans and embrace harmonious coexistence with nature. 🌊🌿🐟 OBO of the Executive of the International Society of Applied Phycology Dr Stefan Kraan President International Society for Applied Phycology https://buff.ly/4bZzBdH Photo: Thierry showing the concept of IMTA with Alaria esculenta and Saccharina latissima lines growing close to mussels and salmon aquaculture. "To Save Life onEarth, Bring Back Taxonomy" A lot of taxonomy work happens in herbariums, which are like libraries of dried plant specimens usually found at universities and botanical gardens. Interestingly, many undiscovered species are likely already sitting in these collections, just waiting to be named. Unfortunately, even herbariums are facing funding cuts, with some major institutions finding them too expensive to maintain. Read moe here
