🌍 Empowering Africa's Youth Through Land Rights 🌍 In his powerful address at the Fourth International Conference on Youth and Land Governance in Africa (CIGOFA4), His Royal Highness Drani Stephen Izakare, Paramount Chief of the Madi tribe and Chairman General of FATA, highlighted an urgent truth: Africa's sustainable development depends on empowering youth with secure land rights. Land access is more than economics; it’s culture, identity, and the foundation for our future. With 90% of sub-Saharan Africa’s land under customary tenure, youth and women often face restricted access. HRH Izakare calls for increased resources for traditional authorities, closer cooperation with governments, and integration of Pan-African unity to transform land access and rural economies. Together, let’s create a sustainable and prosperous future by ensuring our youth have the opportunities they need. 🌍 Securing Land Rights for Africa’s Youth: A Path to Sustainable Development 🌍 As we gather for the Fourth International Conference on Youth and Land Governance in Africa (CIGOFA4), it's clear: securing land rights for Africa’s youth is crucial to our continent’s future. Africa is home to the world’s largest population of young people, and by 2050, this number will double. Yet, many young Africans are systematically excluded from owning or managing land—due to traditional tenure systems, urbanization, and lack of formal documentation. This exclusion stifles not only individual livelihoods but also innovation, economic growth, and social stability across Africa. Why does this matter? 🛤️ Economic Empowerment: Land access allows young Africans to engage in agriculture, tourism, and real estate—key sectors that can drive our economies forward. 🌱 Environmental Stewardship: Youth, often at the forefront of climate action, can implement sustainable land management practices. 🤝 Social Stability: When young people have a voice in land governance, they feel a deeper sense of ownership, fostering peace and community resilience. Strategic land use planning is key to addressing these challenges. It’s not just about allocating land—it’s about ensuring youth participation in how land is used and managed, creating a more equitable and sustainable future for all. At the African Development Bank, we are working to promote policies that prioritize youth land rights and ensure a future where young people can lead the way in land governance. Together, we can unlock the full potential of Africa’s next generation. 🌍 World Food Day: The Role of Land in Securing Our Future 🌱 As we mark #WorldFoodDay, it's crucial to recognize that feeding the world starts with land. With the global population growing, ensuring food security for all requires sustainable land use and governance. 🌾 At the heart of the challenge lies the need to empower smallholder farmers, particularly women, who produce much of the world's food yet face limited access to land and resources. Secure land rights boost productivity and can enhance food security for millions of rural households, leading to better nutrition and livelihoods. 📈 However, climate change and land degradation are threatening progress. To tackle these challenges, we need sustainable practices that increase yields without expanding agricultural land. Investment in climate-smart agriculture and tenure security is vital for a just, food-secure future. 🌿 At the Land Portal Foundation, we are committed to fostering knowledge and solutions at the intersection of land and food security. 🌍 Today, on the International Day of Rural Women, the Land Portal Foundation shines a light on the critical role of women in land governance and the persistent challenges they face regarding land tenure security. Despite being at the heart of agricultural work and community sustenance, millions of rural women worldwide still lack direct rights to the land they cultivate. From discriminatory laws to patriarchal norms, women are more likely to experience tenure insecurity than men, particularly in the Global South. 🌾 Large-scale land acquisitions, climate change impacts, and everyday property deprivations leave women vulnerable, often without recourse or security. 🚨 The statistics are telling: 20% of women globally feel tenure insecure, as much as men. Yet, without secure rights, women often lack the agency and opportunity to protect the land they work so hard to nurture. 📊 The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) highlight the importance of secure land tenure for women to achieve gender equity, economic growth, and sustainable development. Data from initiatives like Prindex and campaigns like Stand for Her Land (S4HL) emphasize that women's land rights are crucial to not only gender equality but also climate change resilience. As we advocate for rural women today, let us continue to push for gender-equitable land policies, dismantling discriminatory practices, and ensuring that rural women everywhere have the secure land rights they deserve. 🌱👩🌾 Read our Land & Gender portfolio here: https://lnkd.in/ed5YdHgG #RuralWomen #LandRights #GenderEquality #SDGs #ClimateAction #InternationalDayofRuralWomen #LandTenure #StandForHerLand Landesa, Victoria Stanley, Anne Hennings, PhD, Renee Giovarelli
