This week, we kicked off “Art for Climate Justice” in Belém, Brazil! The programme started with a visit to Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi and the session "Amazônia, sacred territory, ancestral culture”, during which Roberta Tavares, BorBlue, and Marlúcia Bonifácio Martins, shared their perspectives on the city within its socio-cultural and political context. We spent the second day in Icoaraci, as part of the traditional ceramic workshop Família Sant'ana, and we also paid a visit to the oldest Carimbó house, Coisas de Negro, together with Mestre Nego Ray, a prominent figure in the Pará carimbó culture. Afterwards, we headed to Flexeira Beach, where we met with carimbó masters and musicians at the Latino Paraense Inn. We look forward to welcoming you to the public programme of the event on 20 and 21 September at Curro Velho, for two dynamic days of workshops, screenings, and round tables. Are you an artist or cultural worker from the Global South who has been living and/or working in the Netherlands? Have you experienced challenges and obstacles in relation to your participation in the Dutch cultural scene? This year we have seen how Dutch cultural institutions are struggling to bridge the gap between diversity efforts and the reality faced by international voices. That’s why, as part of our upcoming event “Internationalisation(s)”, taking place at Boekman Foundation in Amsterdam on 3 October, we want to reflect on and discuss the barriers that often prevent international artists and cultural workers from fully being immersed in the Dutch cultural scene, including but not limited to language and bureaucracy. We want to bring in a variety of points of views and experiences, and your story can help us reach the institutions and people shaping culture in the Netherlands today. Would you like to (anonymously) share your experiences and contribute to the discussion on 3 October? Please reach out using the form here: loom.ly/ZggDbqc. Deadline for submissions: 15 September. Happening tomorrow: “Language, Technology, Power”, an online event part of the ongoing series “Seeing Like a Fund”. Join us on 29 August between 15:00-17:00 CEST when three artists from the Fund’s network will share their experiences and reflections on issues surrounding language and technology in relation to access and sustainable artistic networks. Translator Wirunwan Victoria Pitaktong, photographer Sofiane Bakouri, and visual artist Alexis Villanueva Niebles will reflect on how the dominance of the English language in the art and funding worlds affects artists' opportunities, and how cross-language communication technologies prioritize European languages, raising concerns about excluding artists who speak so-called "low-resource languages".
