🌄 𝗥𝗲𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝗮𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝘃𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲! As part of Fundación Española de Renaturalización - Rewilding Spain's work to support wildlife comeback and revive natural processes in this landscape, four cinereous vultures were released in Alto Tajo Natural Park, joining a growing group that will help rebalance the ecosystem. These keystone scavengers play a vital role in cycling nutrients and maintaining the health of the landscape. Fitted with GPS trackers, each vulture’s journey is carefully monitored, offering valuable insights into their behaviour and adaptation to the area. With plans to release up to 40-50 birds (of which 21 released so far), these #rewilding actions are bringing a new sense of wildness back to the Iberian Highlands, supporting local biodiversity and strengthening the role of nature-based tourism. 🧱🔨🌊 Breaking barriers to wilder waterscapes in Sweden! With support from the European Open Rivers Programme, Rewilding Sweden has removed four small dams in the Vindel River catchment, reconnecting 84 km of waterways in the Vindelälven-Juhttátahkka Biosphere Reserve. These efforts are reviving natural river processes, helping fish and other species thrive once again. Rivers are nature’s lifelines, offering a treasure trove of benefits for people and nature alike. As we face the waves of climate change and other challenges, it’s time for a new relationship with water—inviting it back into our landscapes and rewilding it where we can. 🌍✨ Dam removal is increasingly recognised as one of the most direct and effective ways to restore rivers and their many benefits. As Isak Edström from Rewilding Sweden puts it, “When it comes to enhancing the health and functionality of rivers and the areas connected to them, removing these dams can be thought of as picking the low-hanging fruit.” The removal of barriers is part of Rewilding Sweden’s broader efforts to rewild the catchment of the Vindel River, and part of a long-term strategy towards wilder waterscapes: recognising that healthy rivers are not only crucial for aquatic life but also enrich the entire surrounding landscape, supporting a vibrant web of ecosystems. 🌊🌿 A second grant from the Open Rivers Programme will allow the team to assess five additional dams for removal next year. Five more eagle owls released in the Danube Delta! 🦉 As part of the efforts to re-establish a stable population of this iconic species in the region, five more eagle owls have just been released into the wild in the Danube Delta rewilding landscape in Ukraine. These apex predators play a vital role in maintaining the health of the ecosystem by controlling rodent populations and supporting biodiversity. Before being released, the owls spent several weeks in a specially built adaptation enclosure to acclimatize to their new home. Some of the owls were fitted with GPS transmitters, allowing the Rewilding Danube Delta team to track their movements and gather important data to support future rewilding efforts.🛰️ This latest release, also supported by the Endangered Landscapes & Seascapes Programme, is the largest single-batch since the reintroduction programme began in 2019. A WILD MEETING Looking back at a wonderful and productive week at #WildQuarters, our head office in the Netherlands, where we had our annual Network Executive Team meeting of Rewilding Europe. All landscape leaders from our current 10 operational landscapes, and members of the central Leadership Team met for three days to look at progress and plans for next year and discuss opportunities and challenges. Very excited to see the progress we have been making all together, both on demonstrating practical #rewilding, and scaling up rewilding across #Europe. A snapshot of the topics addressed: overall progress 2024, landscape updates, co-production, scoping new rewilding landscapes, fundraising strategy, land access, rewilding forests, rewilding rivers, coastal/marine rewilding, human-wildlife coexistence, site-based business models, alignment and branding, upscaling pathways, organisational development, wilder parks, planning 2025 and many more. During a field visit to the Royal Forest (Kroondomein het Loo) at the #Veluwe we looked at rewilding forest business models, led by Jaap Kuper from Natuurvolgend Bosbeheer, and discussed the return of the wolf 🐺 in the Netherlands and its impact on wildlife, forest regeneration and society with Hugh Jansman from Wageningen University & Research. It was a great opportunity for learning from each other, team building, meet new colleagues, share stories, have fun and take stock of where we have come so far with our mission and vision for a wilder Europe 💚🇪🇺! 🌍✨ Celebrating a fantastic collaboration! The first translocation through Rewilding Europe’s Natural Grazing Facility has successfully brought Exmoor horses from Grazelands Rewilding (former Stichting Taurus) to Saksfjed Vildmark, a Danish rewilding initiative and proud member of the European Rewilding Network since earlier this year. Natural grazing is an important ecological process, making our landscapes more diverse and resilient. The #NaturalGrazingFacility aims to scale up natural grazing across Europe by connecting organisations in need of or with a surplus of (semi-)wild herbivores, like horses, deer, bison or cattle. Led by the Hempel Foundation, Saksfjed Vildmark is transforming its 800-hectare coastal site, previously used for agriculture, into a vibrant habitat for wildlife. With the horses sourced from Grazelands Rewilding, now adding up to more than 200 horses and bovines in the area, natural processes are being restored. Impact is already seen in how the animals open up dense forests, creating space for wildflowers to bloom and helping to form sand pits that benefit insects like bees and beetles. 🌊 Exciting developments for freshwater ecosystems in Italy's Central Apennines! Rewilding Apennines just opened a second white-clawed crayfish breeding centre 🦞, enhancing the ongoing reintroduction efforts by the team, supported by funding from Fondation Ensemble and Mossy Earth. The white-clawed crayfish is a #KeystoneSpecies vital for maintaining balance in freshwater habitats. With this new centre, located on the Gizio River, they aim to restore and strengthen populations of this unique species while contributing to the overall restoration of our #rivers. The opening was celebrated with a special community event in Pettorano sul Gizio, drawing around 40 local residents 👥. This memorable occasion featured presentations, guided walks, stories, and artistic performances, helping to raise awareness about the importance of rivers and crayfish.
