This is Why💭: Agroforestry needs a bigger role in the carbon market. At the European Carbon Farming Summit, the conversation focused heavily on Soil Organic Carbon (SOC). But what about #trees? Their role in carbon sequestration is often overlooked and under-represented. However, integrating trees into farmlands via #agroforestry provides measurable, scalable, and reliable carbon storage alongside a set of additional benefits. ✅ Easier Carbon Measurement: Carbon stored in trees is simpler to quantify at scale than SOC, making tree-based carbon credits more trustworthy. ✅ Beyond Carbon: Agroforestry enhances biodiversity, reduces soil erosion, and strengthens overall ecosystem health. ✅ Remote Sensing for Accuracy: Sparse and costly field data can be complemented with remote sensing and AI to assess tree carbon storage over time and space; locally trained RS/ML models perform best. ✅ Agroforestry-Specific Equations Matter: Trees grow differently in agroforestry than in forests, making standard forestry equations less applicable. This highlights a need for agroforestry-specific allometric equations. 💡🌳This is where the INNO4CFIs Project comes in! From measuring how much carbon is stored per tree in agroforestry systems to developing remote-sensing-based ML models tailored for agroforestry across Europe, INNO4CFI is advancing science-backed, scalable carbon assessments—capturing the full value of agroforestry beyond just carbon. We showcased this at the European Carbon Summit (see posters below) This is why agroforestry and carbon make sense—because adding trees to the land unlocks enormous potential for carbon projects. Let us know with👍 if you start to see the power of trees in agroforestry! *Reminder: INNO4CFIs Accelerator deadline: March 13, 2025 https://lnkd.in/graRFiNq #Agroforestry #CarbonSequestration #RemoteSensing #INNO4CFI #RegenerativeAgriculture #Space4Good #EuropeanCarbonFarmingSummit
