The workforce has made its expectations clear: learning and development are no longer optional. According to the Randstad Workmonitor 2025 report, 44 percent of workers wouldn’t accept a job without opportunities to develop future-relevant skills, and 41 percent would quit if no learning and development opportunities were offered—a sharp rise from 29 percent last year. AI and emerging technology skills are now a top priority, yet access to training remains uneven. Younger employees and white-collar workers benefit the most, leaving others behind. Despite recognizing the urgency—90 percent of employers say reskilling is their responsibility—58 percent admit they don’t know how to do more. Without a clear strategy, businesses risk losing top talent to organizations that prioritize upskilling. HR leaders must take action by ensuring equitable access to training, aligning skilling with business needs, and closing the trust gap around continuous learning. Companies that get this right will be the ones that attract, engage, and retain the workforce of the future.
