Vitol is a leader in the energy sector with a presence across the spectrum; from oil to power, renewables and carbon.

Over ons

We are a leader in the energy sector with a presence across the spectrum; from oil through to power, renewables and carbon credits. Every day we use our expertise to distribute energy around the world. We source from producers, refiners and intermediaries and deliver to refineries, utilities, airlines and retail distribution networks as well as wholesalers and other traders. We manage the physical risk associated with moving energy. Our business is global: we trade over 7 million barrels per day of crude oil and products and charter around 6,000 ship voyages a year. We also use our technical expertise to manage a global network of energy infrastructure that we deploy to help meet supply and demand flows worldwide. Our trading and logistical expertise is supported by a suite of proprietary technology applications that we build and maintain in-house. From more than 40 offices worldwide, we seek to add value across the energy supply chain, including deploying our scale and market understanding to help facilitate the energy transition. To date, we have committed over $2 billion of capital to renewable projects and sustainable energy solutions. The focus of our business is changing, and we are always looking for new people to help build the company for the next decade and beyond. We are a flat organisation that has a collaborative and entrepreneurial ethos. Vitol’s people are empowered to own their decisions and take responsibility for their actions. The culture is underpinned by our core values of integrity, honesty and humility. Our colleagues comprise c.1,600 people with 65+ nationalities represented, making us a truly global organisation. • In our recently published long term oil demand outlook, we highlight some of our current thinking given the information we have at present and in the context of an evolving energy mix. Our outlook for road transport fuel demand hinges on the pace of electrification for vehicles, particularly for passenger cars and HCVs. Currently, the growing availability of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles for individual and commercial use is transforming the road transport market. For the first time, road transport continues to grow, but without a corresponding rise in the demand for petroleum fuels. Based on our current forecast trajectory, road transport fuels are likely to remain a large portion of consumption, but their share of total demand is anticipated to decline to represent just under 40% of the barrel by 2040. If, however, progress in electrification stalls, road transport fuel demand could increase significantly. • ‘People overestimate the degree of change achievable in the short term, but underestimate the scale of transformation possible over the long term,’ commented Clive Christison, Head of investment and origination at Vitol during the strategic roundtable - 'Reinventing Energy Scenarios for the 21st century' at #CERAWeek on Wednesday. 'While scenarios are important to support an outlook and forecasts, it is critical to stress test these, and it should always be the fundamentals that inform thinking.' 'This remains the case in the current hectic news cycle; the level of uncertainty and the speed at which changes are communicated creates a lot of noise, but ultimately it is the understanding of the fundamentals that support optimal responses. The granular view is key as events have very different impacts depending on the sector, geography, market etc.' 'Similarly when considering the medium term – 3 to 5 years – uncertainty likely comes from more cyclical drivers rather than structural factors. Far better to spend time understanding the underlying market drivers and make a pragmatic call.' #InvestmentScenarios #fundamentals

  • Detailed and insightful discussion from Eduard Ruijs, head of transition at Vitol, and co-lead of our investments and origination function, and fellow participants during the Climate hub session, ‘How to drive capital into the #EnergyTransition’   Starting with how much the landscape has changed over his career, Eduard focused on the lessons learnt from the early-2000s; the importance of government support mechanisms and predictable and progressive #regulation that supports a positive investment environment, motivation to achieve scale and associated cost reductions.   He noted that, over time, #renewables have progressed closer to grid parity, leading to real momentum, and the transition of big utilities and oil companies to energy companies with ambitious renewables ambitions.   Fast forward to the early 2020s; the energy transition investment environment was at its height, and ultimately led to an overvaluation of underlying transitional assets in the market, as investors believed the energy transition boom would endure.   Since then, Eduard commented that, there are political headwinds in some regions, as governments and large energy companies are recalibrating their transition strategies. In addition low carbon energy systems have become significantly more complex, so investors need to have a very keen understanding of energy markets, and the different solutions - like power management, #offtake agreements – in combination with capital, needed to make #sustainable investments work.   Bullish on the continuation of the energy transition over the coming years, Eduard highlighted the approach in some developing economies where known challenges like intermittency are addressed at tender stage, requiring developers to provide round the clock energy solutions, intrinsically demanding hybrid projects combining solar and wind, and also the incorporation of #BatteryEnergyStorageSystems. In addition, he emphasised the benefits of distributed solutions that renewables can offer in places where there is a lack of core infrastructure. • It was a lively conversation on Monday as Russell Hardy, CEO, Vitol participated in the #CERAWeek plenary session, ‘Doing business in a multi-speed world’. The panel touched on short and long term #oil and #gas demand, navigating a fast changing geopolitical and economic environment, and planning for the #EnergyTransition. Russell opined that in the longer term it is likely that #OilDemand will fundamentally decline; after a peak, reaching similar levels in 2040 as we see today, while #LNG will continue to be used for power, as well as increasingly as a transition fuel particularly for heavy road transport and in maritime. In the short term, #fundamentals of #supply and #demand and geopolitics suggest it is likely that there’ll be some uncertainty ahead, with oil staying within the $60-$80 per barrel range. • In our recently published long term oil demand outlook, we highlight some of our current thinking given the information we have at present, and in the context of an evolving energy mix. Despite increasing use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) over our forecast period to 2040, we anticipate that petroleum-derived jet fuel will increase as a proportion of the product barrel, likely reaching around 10% by 2040. We do not expect peak demand for petroleum-derived jet fuel before then.
