VPS has assisted Norwegian Shipowners' Association (Norges Rederiforbund) and Offshore Norge in updating the analysis of the offshore industry’s path towards the national emission targets. VPS contributed with insight from the #Maress database, in combination with our advisory services. This year’s report has a new level of details in the chapter on Maritime Operations, providing deep insight into savings seen in various parts of the vessel operations and across vessel segments +++. The numbers clearly show that the emission intensity from maritime ops is dropping, but at the same time the activity is increasing. For vessel owners ++, the part of the report highlighting savings potential from battery solutions and shorepower may be especially interesting. We also encourage everyone to take a look at the concrete industry examples (pp56 & 57) on how digital solutions and new technologies can contribute to emission reductions. Woot woot!🥳 Team Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) has completed the last of its #biofuels supply chain trials,⛓️ marking the end of a monstrous pilot we started in July 2022 to development a framework to provide quality, quantity and emissions abatement assurance for drop-in fuels. Announcement here: https://lnkd.in/g3feXCMw In scoping this pilot, we spoke with >150 stakeholders to understand their pain points:🤕 Fuel purchasers:💵 Despite the existence of certification schemes, like #ISCC,🔖 vulnerabilities exist in the #bunker fuel supply chain.⛓️💥 How do we accurately account for biofuels #emissions abatement factoring in emissions from its transport and blending?🚢 How can we increase confidence that the biofuels sourced sustainably?🌿 How certain are we that the biofuels have not been tempered?🙅🏻♀️ Fuel suppliers:🛢️ What does it take to scale uptake of biofuels? How do we provide more concrete justification for the price premium of biofuels?💹 We worked with fuel purchasers who nominated their fuel suppliers, and conducted our trials with vessels transporting cargo on their commercial routes.🗺️ About 10,000 MT of biofuel blends were bunkered to and consumed by 7 vessels calling at ports in Asia, Australia and Europe.🌏 With the largest vessel a 320,000 DWT VLCC, the 7 vessels sailed a total distance of 31,400 NM.📍 In these biofuels, we deployed physical tracers – synthetic DNA, element-based, organic-based and isotopes – to authenticate the origin🪪 and quantify the biofuels content in blends at key points along the supply chains. We also co-developed a fingerprinting🐾 methodology with VPS, and evaluated the "lock-and-seal"🔐 approach to ensure integrity of the biofuels supply chain. To boot, chemical analyses🧪 of samples collected along the supply chain confirm no degradation of biofuels under commercial operations conditions.👍🏻👍🏻 Read our analyses of biofuels: https://lnkd.in/gDXzbXiy The use of FAME- and HVO-based biofuels blended with HFO, VLSFO and MGO resulted GHG emissions reduction of 24% on a tank-to-wake basis and 20.3% on a well-to-wake basis compared to using fossil fuels across all four trials.📉 We are now compiling our learnings into an assurance framework to share with you!🫵🏻 Look out for our sharing in Q4 2024.👀     Thank you, partners, for teaching us and working with us on this pilot, the results of which should boost user confidence of biofuels as a marine fuel.🥰 CMA CGM, Ocean Network Express, Chevron, Angelicoussis Group, NYK Line, ASTOMOS ENERGY CORPORATION Eastern Pacific Shipping Pte. Successful USA Maritime Decarbonisation Seminar: On Tuesday 16th July, VPS held it's latest USA Seminar, "Maritime Decarbonisation- Your Vessels-Our Expertise", in Miami. Forty five delegates from leading US Shipping companies attended this successful event. The event included insightful presentations from Steve Bee (VPS Group Commercial Director), Jack Grogan (VPS Senior Account Manager), Kimberly Westmoreland (MD, Finco Energies), Lana Sissing (Commercial Manager, Finco Energies), Ricardo Opperman (MD, Wartsila) and Steve Putnam (MD, PEI Technical).
