What Are Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC)? NDCs lay out how each country will contribute to the global temperature goals outlined under the Paris Agreement. They detail countries' plans to slash GHG emissions and help limit global warming to "well below" 2 degrees C, with efforts to limit it to 1.5 degrees C. Many NDCs also include measures to build resilience to climate impacts, such as drought and sea-level rise, and provide information on the finance needed to achieve their commitments. 👉🏼After seven months of intense negotiations, an important advisory group of the #EU has reached a groundbreaking consensus on the future of its agricultural system. The Strategic Dialogue, initiated by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, brought together 29 diverse stakeholders, including farmers' unions, environmental NGOs, industry representatives, and academics, to address growing polarization in the sector. More on the report presented today: 📃 https://bit.ly/3MzlFge The consensus report marks a significant shift in EU #agriculture, focusing on sustainability, resilience, and equity. Key recommendations from the final report include moving away from land-based subsidies, increasing support for small farms, and incentivizing sustainable practices. 👨🌾🚜🌿The dialogue underscores the need for a complete overhaul of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) to better protect farmers and promote healthy, sustainable diets across the continent (less meat and more plant-based proteins) 🫛🥗 As von der Leyen emphasized, the EU must do more to support its farmers and ensure a more resilient, competitive, and sustainable agri-food system. This consensus represents a crucial step towards achieving that vision. 📰 Read more @Euronews https://bit.ly/4g4xrwy #sustainableagriculture #nature #foodsystems #strategicdialogue #EU Systems Transformation Hub WRI Food

Sweden set a powerful example in 2017 with its net-zero target and Climate Act, becoming a pioneer in climate policy. Emissions have been declining since the 1990s, largely due to progressive climate policies driving reduced use of fossil fuels and improved efficiency in the power sector, as well as transport and industry Recent changes—like removing the Ministry for Climate and Environment and reducing biofuel requirements— have raise questions with stakeholders about the future of Sweden's climate leadership. Will Sweden maintain its progressive climate legacy? It's important to watch how these changes impact the long-term effectiveness of Sweden's climate policies. 🔗 Learn more in World Resources Institute's article: https://lnkd.in/gXywH_YY #ClimateAction #NetZero #Sustainability #GreenPolicy #Sweden #GreenSweden

Have you ever wondered if climate change affects more than just people? Well, you are about to discover that it impacts the global financial system a lot. Recent insights from the World Resources Institute show the need for a transformative change in how we approach climate finance–both private and public sources– to support climate mitigation, adaptation, and resilience, within the Global Financial System. Key takeaways: Systemic Risk: The climate crisis is not just an environmental issue—it's a financial one. If we fail to integrate climate risk into our financial systems, we expose global markets to significant instability. Investment Shift: We need to transition from funding high-carbon projects to green, sustainable alternatives such as green industrialisation, decarbonisation pathways and resilient infrastructure, so that sustainable development follows. Policy and Regulation: Governments and financial institutions must work together to create policies that drive climate-aligned investments. The financial system should reward low-carbon innovations, ensuring capital flows where it's most needed. Global Cooperation: Climate finance is a global challenge requiring global solutions. From developing nations to the most advanced economies, collaboration is key to ensuring that climate resilience is built into the fabric of our financial structures and to ensure we meet the Paris Agreement goals. Curious about the future of finance in a changing climate? 🌍 Europe is generating too much waste, and the consequences are significant. Despite efforts to improve recycling, the sheer volume of waste continues to grow. 👉 Each European citizen produces on average 4.8 tonnes of waste annually, that equals to one mini-van full of waste, plus the weight of the transportation van. 🚐 It's high time to drop our buy–consume–waste habits. We should embrace a circular economy to reduce waste and keep valuable resources in use. ♻️ The latest insights from the European Environment Agency highlight the urgent need for action. Waste prevention is one of the key strategies to achieving a circular economy because it can reduce resource use, maximise the useful life of products and materials, and promote demand for more sustainable products. Let’s work together to minimize waste and protect our planet for generations to come. 🌎In a world where resources are finite, the transition to a circular economy is not just an option—it’s a necessity. By designing out waste, keeping products and materials in use, and regenerating natural systems, we can move away from the traditional "take-make-waste" model. 🔃Here are 6 critical shifts needed to promote the circular economy: 1. Decreasing overconsumption: Decreasing consumption in high consuming societies is the most important shift. Human needs should fit within the planet’s resources. In 9 of the top 15 countries with the largest material footprints, material footprints per capita are still increasing. 2. Use recycled, reused and renewable materials and components: Producers need to replace virgin, non-sustainable materials with recycled materials, previously used components, and sustainably produced renewable materials. 3. Minimize environmental and social harms in resource extraction: Significant environmental and social harms can be caused by improper resource extraction, including deforestation and the destruction of habitats, overfishing, contaminating water sources, human rights violations and use of child labor. Effective measures must be taken and awareness of how resource extraction is linked to activities of producers, retailers and consumers must be raised. 4. Make production more resource efficient: Current production systems are still using resources inefficiently and generating losses of resources in production processes. Material productivity needs to be improved much more quickly than the current trend. 5. Use products longer: A product’s functional lifetime should be extended with durable design and services, such as maintenance, repair, updates, refurbishment and by consumers' behavioral changes, including product reuse. 6. Increase the quantity and value of resources recovered at end of use: Treat waste as a valuable resource.
