How is Finland addressing Carbon Capture and Storage in its National Energy and Climate Plan #NECP❓ 🔹Although Finland acknowledges the role of #CCS in reducing emissions, there is no national CCS implementation strategy outlined. 🔹 The Plan states Finland has limited long-term fossil CO₂ point sources & does not address abatement of industrial process emissions, including from Finnish cement production. 🔹 Lacking geological storage, Finland looks to the North Sea for CO₂ storage, but the Plan does not outline concrete transport infrastructure developments or plans for regional cooperation. Based on information available through other relevant sources, Bellona finds that the final NECP does not reflect the full picture of CCS developments in Finland. 🔗 Read our full assessment & recommendations for the Finnish government: https://lnkd.in/eEqHGM4A Ympäristöministeriö - Miljöministeriet - Ministry of the Environment of Finland VTT Työ- ja elinkeinoministeriö – Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment (Finland) The Finnish Climate Change Panel - Suomen ilmastopaneeli Bioenergia ry #climate #energy #EUclimate #climateaction

🎙️ How can we decarbonise the steel industry & does the Action Plan live up to the challenge? With the European Commission releasing its Steel & Metals Action Plan yesterday, our Policy Advisor, Behnam Lot, joined The Jolt Podcast by FORESIGHT Climate & Energy, hosted by Kira Taylor, to break it down. 📢 "Clean production itself must be a mandatory criterion" The discussion also touched on the upcoming Industrial Decarbonisation Accelerator Act, set to be introduced later this year. Behnam emphasised the importance of lead markets and the need for mandatory non-price environmental criteria in both the Industrial Decarbonisation Accelerator Act and the revision of the Public Procurement framework. "There is increasing pressure on the European steel market," says Behnam, as the industry navigates its path to decarbonisation. 🔗Listen to the full episode here: https://lnkd.in/dKGwrX9f Stay tuned...Our full reaction to the Steel & Metals Action Plan is coming out Monday!

🔴Steel is approaching its “make-or-break” point. This new report on the state of the #EuropeanSteel transition, led by E3G and Beyond Fossil Fuels, and endorsed by 28 civil society organisations, shows that EU countries offer varying levels of support to enable steel companies to make the switch, so far with mixed success. Our colleagues from Bellona Europa and Bellona Deutschland, Behnam Lot, Frauke Eustermann & Frida Røyne contributed to this report in the sections “green hydrogen availability” and “recommendations for public procurement”. The steel sector has “strategic” status under the #CleanIndustrialDeal, and now has its very own action plan, which was published just today. Stay tuned for Bellona’s reaction article coming soon! 👀 📑 Read the report here or below: https://lnkd.in/eJ7cRE3t #SMAP #SteelActionPlan4Europe #climateaction #steel #energytransition

We’re back with our 101 series, this time on #EmbodiedCarbon! What is embodied carbon? Why does it matter for climate action, and why are we pushing for green lead markets? 🛠️ Embodied carbon refers to the CO₂ emissions from materials and construction processes. The building and construction sector alone accounts for 1/3 of the EU’s emissions! Creating demand for clean industrial products, especially materials and construction ones, is essential, and we're pleased to see the CID aims to support this. However, achieving this goal requires the right conditions, particularly the inclusion of non-price environmental criteria in both public procurement and the Industrial Decarbonisation Accelerator Act. 👉 Swipe through to learn more about embodied carbon & check out our recommendations! Cities as climate leaders: The next frontier in carbon removal Climate leadership is in short supply these days – especially in the vital area of carbon dioxide removal (CDR). How do we change that? We build champions! 🏙️ Introducing the City CDR Initiative The City CDR Initiative is a multi-year, non-profit effort to embed CDR in city planning worldwide. We are working to help cities advance their urban priorities through CDR projects by equipping city officials to design policies that maximize synergies. An opportunity baselining phase is being implemented and we are fundraising for a capacity building program. What we aim to achieve: 📌 Fresh demand signals 📌 Novel supply options 📌 Empowered leadership 📌 New narratives 💡 Phase 1: Opportunity baselining Cities hold immense potential for CDR, both as agents of change and as areas for deployment. The current phase explores 1) the full breadth of deployment opportunities (and risks), 2) technical and policy intersections with existing urban priorities, and 3) the leadership pathways available to city governments. 🤝 Meet our phase 1 partners This effort is supported by: C40 Cities; Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM); Carbon Neutral Cities Alliance; Global Carbon Removal Partnership; South Pole; RMI; XPRIZE; Carbon Business Council; Bellona Europa; Carbon Removal Standards Initiative; Carbon Gap; Carbon180; Carbon Removal India Alliance (CRIA); Carbon Removal Canada; Institute for Responsible Carbon Removal American University; 4 Corners Carbon Removal Coalition; and Breakthrough Energy Energy. We also coordinate with Stripe Climate Fellows, including: Asitava Sen, CEO of CRIA, on engaging cities in India; Noah Deich (and the RMI team) on the role of subnational governments in a multinational advanced market commitment (AMC); and Eli Mitchell-Larson on investigating the potential for ‘embedded CDR’. 📢 How you can support this effort 👉Drop a comment below – your thoughts and feedback matter! 👉Like and share to help expand our reach. 👉Follow our LinkedIn page for updates.

Did you know that public procurement accounts for 15% of the EU’s GDP? With their purchasing power, public procurers have the potential to drive demand and create lead markets for low-carbon products. Yet, 55% of tenders still prioritise the lowest price, showing that voluntary environmental & climate criteria are not enough to support Europe’s #climategoals. Our recommendations for revising the Public Procurement Directives: 💠 Make environmental and social criteria mandatory 💠 Ensure MEAT (Most Economically Advantageous Tender) is the default approach 💠 Align procurement with key EU legislation to accelerate industrial decarbonisation 💠 Strengthen strategic resilience through green public procurement by promoting resource efficiency and circular economy principles Bellona believes public procurement should now be leveraged as a driver of the EU’s green transition, industrial leadership & competitiveness. 🔗 Read our full consultation response here: https://lnkd.in/dQWhY3tM Irene Domínguez Pérez Marco Sirotti #GPP #embodiedcarbon #carbonemissions #climateaction #climate #environment #publicprocurement #EUpolicy #climatepolicy #lowcarbon
