As a technical trainee at Elkem ASA, Aymeric Yvon has been working on new ways to treat the solid waste produced by our plant in Roussillon, France—an assignment that complements his background in process chemistry and wastewater treatment 💧 💬 "Usually," Aymeric explains, "we go from lab scale to industrial scale, and we have plenty of experience in such extrapolation. Working the other way around is not very common and can be challenging." But this challenge is one of the most interesting parts of his trainee experience, other than exploring the art and culture that Lyon has to offer, of course! 🌃 By providing hands-on industry experience, the opportunity to work in multiple Elkem plants and offices around the world as well as new social and cultural experiences, Elkem's trainee programme is "a great springboard" for both personal and professional development 🚀 🔗 Read Aymeric's blog here: https://bit.ly/41fTBp3 🔗 Find out more about career opportunities at Elkem: elkem.com/career

At Elkem, we believe in the importance of innovation and collaboration to create a sustainable future, and we're excited to be involved in another groundbreaking project with our partners 🤝 A new initiative, "CO2 logistics Northern Norway," brings together industrial companies, warehouse and transport players and industrial parks, with the goal of facilitating efficient and cost-effective transport and storage of CO2. This initiative, supported by SINTEF and other key partners, will accelerate CCUS (carbon capture, utilisation and storage) efforts in the region, and marks a significant step towards achieving sustainability goals. 💬 Erik Stenback, Elkem's Senior Corporate Specialist, stated, "Elkem has large point discharges in Rana and Salten, and to make CO2 capture possible for Elkem and other industrial companies here in the north, players like us must have a common infrastructure for transport and storage of CO2." Project highlights: 🇳🇴 Norway's leadership: Norway has been a pioneer in CCUS technology, leveraging its vast offshore geological storage capacity and expertise in offshore operations. This leadership is vital for achieving national and global climate goals. 🏭 Industrial impact: CCUS is essential for reducing emissions in hard-to-abate industries. It supports sustainable and competitive industrial practices, ensuring that industries can thrive while minimising their carbon footprint. ✅ Climate goals: CCUS plays a strategic role in global decarbonisation efforts by capturing and storing CO2 that would otherwise contribute to the greenhouse effect. This technology is crucial for meeting the #ParisAgreement targets and mitigating climate change. 🔗🇳🇴 Read more here (in Norwegian): https://bit.ly/3Qvjex8

Celebrating 20 years of innovation at the Climit summit Today, Elkem had the honour of presenting at the Climit summit, marking the 20th anniversary of the programme. This national programme has been pivotal in advancing research, development, and demonstration of CO2 handling technologies, and Elkem is proud to have received support for our CCS projects. Here are some highlights from our presentation by climate director Trond Saeterstad: 🌱 Elkem's commitment to sustainability: We are dedicated to reducing CO2 emissions through our value chain, aiming for fully climate-neutral production and enabling circular economies. 🤝 Active involvement in CO2 Hub Nord: Since 2018, Elkem has been actively involved in the CO2 Hub Nord, progressing through phases of mapping, piloting, and developing full-scale concepts. 🔬 Carbon capture feasibility study and pilot projects: Our feasibility study in 2020/2021 and pilot projects in 2022/2023 were crucial steps towards implementing carbon capture across Elkem plants. 🏭 Energy recovery and carbon capture: We are currently doing a FEL 2 study (pre-feed) on the possibilities of capturing all CO2 and recovering energy at Elkem and Ferroglobe’s plants in Rana, with targets of 500,000 metric tonnes of CO2 storage per year and 900 GWh/year of energy recovery. In parallel, we are developing the same concept at our Elkem Salten plant, also with 500.000 metric tonnes of CO2 per year. For both projects, we are also working actively for framework conditions to support carbon capture and storage in Norwegian industry. Thank you to CLIMIT Summit 2025 with Gassnova SF and The Research Council of Norway (Norges forskningsråd) for their unwavering support! #CCS #Sustainability #CLIMITSUMMIT2025

A sustainable future is dependent on metals, and since metal production is notoriously energy-intensive, it's important to find new production methods with lower environmental impact 🌱 Elkem ASA invests heavily in developing new technologies reducing our carbon footprint. We focus on increasing energy efficiency, using more biocarbon as a reductant and optimising our production methods to minimise emissions, and our production in Norway is powered by renewable energy, resulting in much lower emissions than the global average 📉 Creating industry-wide change, however, requires collaboration and partnerships, which is why we're proud to be one of several industrial partners of the new FME ZeMe initiative for zero-emission metal production 🤝 The initiative launched in January and will continue over the next eight years. 💬 When it comes to current metal production methods, "Many of the solutions available now are too expensive, too complicated," says Vegar Andersen, an R&D manager who works with Elkem's Silicon Products operations and coordinates external research related to furnaces and taphole operations. By working together with other industry leaders and research institutions, Vegar explains, we can pool our resources and expertise to develop innovative solutions that benefit everyone and support the goal of achieving emission-free Norwegian metal production by 2050. We expect FME ZeMe to act as a catalyst for change, encouraging other companies to adopt more sustainable practices and work towards a zero-emissions future 🌍 📹 Video produced by FME ZeMe
