Together, we enable sustainable maritime development.

Om oss

Gard is a shipowner-controlled provider of P&I, marine and energy insurance products. Founded in Arendal in Norway, it is one of the largest marine insurers in the world, offering shipowners and operators, shipyards, contractors and energy companies a breadth and choice of products not available anywhere else in one place. For more than 100 years, we have been insuring the global maritime industries for their whole range of risks. Today, Gard is the world’s largest P&I club and the second largest marine insurer – employing nearly 700 people in 13 global offices. For our employees, our dynamic business model and commitment to employee development and training, mean that we can offer the opportunity to gain world-class expertise, international experience and the flexibility to move between disciplines and roles. Assuranceforeningen Gard was founded in 1907 in Arendal. Its foundation was driven by owners of sailing ships’ reluctance to subsidise the liabilities arising from steam operations. In 2003, Gard Marine & Energy was formed to extend the products offered by the group.

Congratulations to Kimmy Carrie Necesario, this year’s Gard-sponsored student at the World Maritime University, on her graduation! The graduation ceremony was led by the Secretary General of the IMO, Arsenio Dominguez in his capacity as Chancellor of the University. In his address, he acknowledged the support of the donors who provide fellowships for students.  Gard was represented at the event by Helenka Leary, Senior Corporate Lawyer. Following her graduation, Kimmy will now return to her post with the Philippine Coast Guard. The WMU was established by the IMO in 1983 to increase the number of highly qualified specialist maritime personnel in all countries across the world, and in particular developing countries. Since then, some 6,000 students have graduated from the university and brought their learning back to their respective countries and organisations. #wmu #imo #marineinsurance #gard #

Gard has announced a 10% Owners’ General Discount for renewing mutual Members for the 2025 P&I renewal. Rolf Thore Roppestad, CEO, said: “With this, we continue our streak of returning capital to our membership, providing stability and consistency in a volatile time. We ensure financial robustness and long-term resilience, while at the same time not holding more capital than is needed.”   Gard also announced a 4 per cent premium increase for the upcoming P&I renewal to keep next year’s underwriting result in balance, with a marginal loss on the mutual insurance product. Bjørnar Andresen, Gard’s Chief Underwriting Officer, explained: “The macroeconomic outlook continues to be uncertain, and we need to take into account an expected increase in claims. With a moderate premium adjustment, we are ensuring that we can continue to offer mutual P&I at competitive prices, while at the same time ensuring the group’s long-term stability.” #marineinsurance #gard #maritime https://lnkd.in/ecwgMQNS

The IMO has updated its fuel oil sampling guidelines. The 'MARPOL delivered sample' size has increased from 400ml to 600ml and must now also be available for checking the flashpoint requirements under SOLAS Regulation II-2/4.2.1. The minimum 60 degrees Celsius (°C) flashpoint limit in SOLAS Regulation II-2/4.2.1.1 is not new, but the regulations designed to prevent the supply of oil fuel in breach of this limit are. #bunkering #imo #marpol #marineinsurance #gard https://lnkd.in/ebY-Rmn3

Fuel EU will have an impact on vessel purchase contracts. Buying a vessel that has operated in the EU after 1 January 2025 may bring unexpected costs. After FuelEU comes into force, the buyers of vessels will need to check if the vessel has been trading in the EU. If it has not traded in the EU in the period prior to change of ownership, there is less of a concern. However, it may become necessary for a buyer to perform a more thorough analysis of the vessel’s previous movements or include suitable protections in the sales contract to cover outstanding FuelEU liabilities. For example, a buyer from 2026 onwards may seek a warranty that there has been no “borrowing” under the regulations in previous years. #fueleu #maritime #europe #ship #marineinsurance #gard https://lnkd.in/ezDWBEK4

So far this year, the number of weather-related incidents off the coast of South Africa has reached the same level as the combined total for the last three years. Since October 2023, we have seen a massive shift in traffic away from the Red Sea, with most of the change happening after the seizure of the Galaxy Leader in November 2023. In relative terms, the greatest increase in the traffic has come from larger vehicle carriers and container vessels. Prior to the geopolitical tensions in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, hardly any vessels of this size took the route around the Cape. In our article, Siddharth Mahajan, Robert Dadson and Kim Thomassen Watle, CFA dive deeper into the weather-related and navigational risks associated with diverting off South Africa and highlight the areas where we see most accidents, the types of vessels most exposed, and the precautions shipowners and mariners should be taking when rerouting to this area. #southafrica #weather #marineinsurance #maritime #accidents #gard https://lnkd.in/eZdbBjvA

Roll-on/roll-off and tanker vessels will be added to the vessel types required to control their emissions while at berth in a California port from 1 January 2025. Since 2014, the California Resource Board (CARB) has regulated emissions from container, refrigerated cargo (reefer), and passenger vessels that visit certain state ports.  The regulation covers emissions from container, reefer and passenger vessels, and now expands the requirements to more pollutants and vessel types. CARB determines the need for emission control regulation in each port based on the port’s annual vessel activity. #airemission #airpollution #california #marineinsurance #gard https://lnkd.in/eMRKuBD8
