If you are an ocean scientist who has an interest in technology and enjoys bringing it to the market, it's essential to comprehend academic perspectives. Kongsberg Discovery has many highly educated experts in ocean science, including fields like hydrology, acoustics, and other advanced technologies. Scott Loranger is an Acoustician and Applications Scientist in Kongsberg Discovery. In this interview with the @Oceanography, he explains that his role involves bridging his academic perspective and knowledge with clients from both commercial businesses and scientific organization’s. Dr. Loranger says that he has always been interested in applied research using emerging technologies, and therefore looked at federal research labs, vehicle and platform manufacturers, and sensor/ instrument manufacturers. “In the end, I found my current position where I work with the instruments that I used for my research in academia,” he says. KONGSBERG recently showcased the power of hydroacoustics with a detailed inspection of the historic Lower Harbor Ore Dock at Marquette on Lake Superior. Jessica Daignault, Ph.D., P.E., in Kongsberg Discovery was part of the team showcasing the technology from KONGSBERG. “Long-term exposure to the forces of water and weather takes their toll. Add in decades of large vessel operations and you have a recipe for undermining structural integrity. The iconic Lower Harbor Ore Dock retains its strength and beauty above the waterline, but we also wanted to make sure it was equally as robust below the water surface”, she says. The technology gave a powerful demonstration of that ability, revealing the dock as it’s never been seen before. “It’s the kind of infrastructure inspection that can be challenging when using traditional methods, such as dive teams, but can be conducted efficiently and safely with modern hydroacoustic solutions,” says Daignault. Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area and ranks third in volume, containing 10% of the planet's surface fresh water. The Lower Arbour Ore Dock stands as a historical remnant of Marquette's iron ore mining and maritime industries, once utilized for loading ore onto lake freighters. Notably, the first-ever ore dock for the iron industry was constructed in Marquette in 1857. "Safe autonomous navigation systems for shipping", a project were Kongsberg Maritime, Kongsberg Discovery, Norges teknisk-naturvitenskapelige universitet (NTNU), Torghatten/Bastø Fosen, and DNV are collaborating to develop advanced navigation systems. Data from radars and cameras are analyzed and fused with AIS data (real-time digital information about ships' position, direction, speed, etc.) and a digital chart (ECDIS) to enhance situational awareness. This fused data is displayed over stabilized video from two camera clusters that provide 360-degree coverage. The result is "Augmented Reality". While Autocrossing and Autodocking minimize the need for crew intervention, the situational awareness system serves as an electronic lookout, offering advice when obstacles or unexpected situations interfere with the planned route. This combination of technologies enhances safety at sea. #KONGSBERG #Autnomousnavigation #ProtectingPeopleandPlanet

The Global Blue Economy is growing – in 2030 it is expected to reach USD 3 trillion. Why isn’t the Ocean Enterprise comprising ocean observing related instruments, platforms and services, identified as a distinct market sector yet asks Peer Fietzek in Kongsberg Discovery. He was among the keynote speakers during the workshop of the Ocean Best Practices System, a global initiative aimed at improving and standardising practices for collecting, analysing and sharing ocean data and information. The objective for this meeting was to facilitate the cross-cutting primary role of best practices in operational oceanography by promoting dialogues across science and technology. Fietzek underlined that there are changes underway, in academia and science, the industry and in the society. Ocean data and services are critical to the growing blue economy and society linked to the topics of: 📍 Ocean management – ecosystems services and sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, biodiversity protection, 📍 Climate change – forecast, adaptation and investment in carbon storage, 📍 Small-footprint transport and tourism, 📍 Sustainable offshore energy. “For a solution to be truly sustainable its impacts on the environment must be well understood”, says Tonny Algrøy in Kongsberg Discovery in an interview with environment coastal & offshore (eco) magazine. Offshore wind is a big business. According to Westwood WindLogix, 67.4 GW of installed capacity at the end of 2023 is forecast to blossom to 414 GW by 2032, with mature markets such as China, the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands being joined by ambitious players including Norway, the US, and France. With energy companies looking to develop sites further offshore, in deeper waters, there is a new depth to the complexity to the protection of valuable ecosystems, both in the water column and on the seafloor. Algrøy underlines the importance of understanding the long-term impacts on local environments and delicate ecosystems. “Caution is needed to ensure this new energy gold rush rolls out responsibly, particularly regarding local ecosystems.” For the full story👇 #KONGSBERG #OceanScience #BlueEconomy #SustainableOceanManagement #ProtectingPeopleandPlanet

KONGSBERG takes part in important discussions and interesting perspectives on the high Arctic. During a week in Reykjavik, Iceland more than 3000 people from over 70 countries gather together at Artic Circle, the largest network of international dialogue and cooperation on the future of the Arctic and our Planet. In a time of big power rivalries and increased awareness about economic and national security, the Arctic is also affected. To ensure we can make sustainable use of the Arctic and preserve the environment and everyone living in it, it's important to be well-informed about how we can cooperate safely and securely. Director Arne Hestnes in Kongsberg Discovery participated in a panel discussion "Digitizing the Artic - Science and Industry Synergies. Interesting discussions with Hanne Sagen, Katarina Gårdfeldt, Jørgen Qvist, Benoît Pirenne, Bjorn Ronning, Tore Furevik and Cato Lammenes. Discussing ocean and global climate solutions has never been more important. Artic Circle is an open democratic platform with participation from governments, organizations, corporations, universities, think tanks, environmental associations, indigenous communities, concerned citizens, and others. #ProtectingCriticalInfrastructure #Science #Artic #ArticCircleAssembly
