🌍 We’re excited to have joined the field test in Rwanda for the innovative new World Health Organization hybrid learning model for Basic Emergency Care. Laerdal has been working in collaboration with the WHO to adapt its highly successful Basic Emergency Care course to a hybrid format, reducing required in-person time to just 2 days enhanced with eLearning modules and new tools for hands-on simulation-based training sessions for time-critical emergencies. 🚑💻 This innovative approach empowers first contact health workers with essential skills while making training more accessible and affordable. Recently, BEC hybrid pilot tests took place in several hospitals in Rwanda, including King Faisal Hospital Rwanda facilitated by Dr. Tsion Firew. This pilot program is set to scale up BEC training across the country. ➡ Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/dcd5KAyA

“As technology is advancing, so is healthcare. Not only in terms of tools and equipment, but also in ways of training healthcare personnel, such as midwives. With technology, even the most remote healthcare professionals can be reached. … But technology alone does not make a difference. Midwives do.” In our latest Partner Q&A, hear from Anna Frellsen, CEO of the global non-profit organization Maternity Foundation, as she shares insights on how technology can advance maternal health. Don’t miss it! 👇 https://lnkd.in/d9JMkCJ4

🌟 We know that practice is key for getting the most out of anything we do, and simulation training is no different. But it goes beyond just technical skills, it's also about decision-making, situational awareness, and team communication—especially during the critical Golden Minute after birth if a newborn isn’t breathing. At Haydom Lutheran Hospital in Tanzania, they’re setting the gold standard for low-dose, high-frequency training. How are they doing it? By engaging local champions from the labor ward to inspire and motivate their colleagues, highlighting the need for high-quality ventilation training. A year later, they've documented an impressive 8,500 individual skill trainings, with 75% of the team now participating in monthly sessions. ✨ Have a few minutes? Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) is a vital element of routine care for low birth weight or premature newborns. We are delighted to see our CarePlus preterm-wrap supporting a new father in Burkina Faso to adopt this method and provide one of his new twins with this much needed skin-to-skin care. 💚
Pictured: A new father in Burkina Faso practicing the kangaroo method with one of his premature newborn twins. ❤️ The bond between a parent and newborn is established early on and is critically important, especially with a premature baby. The kangaroo method is centered around skin-to-skin contact which can improve a baby’s sleep and growth, as well as help protect them against infection and low body temperature. This type of physical touch also helps strengthen the bond between a parent and their newborn. 📸 Burkina Faso 2024 © Awa Ngom/MSF

✨We’re proud to be working with the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) to build healthcare personnel capacity at 8 government medical colleges in the state of Bihar to enhance emergency maternal, newborn, and pediatric care services under the Doctor’s Mentoring Program. To ensure effective use of space and efficiency, we’ve helped PHFI design and establish 20x20 sq. ft. skills labs at these medical colleges to support hands-on simulation-based training. Additionally, we conducted a Training of Trainers (ToT) program for Obstetricians, Pediatricians, and Anesthesiologists in Patna, enabling them to be prepared to share what they learn with other healthcare professionals. These 40 participants will go on to train others in their respective hospitals creating a ripple effect we believe will result in better care and better outcomes. 🚀

The World Health Summit took place in Berlin last week, bringing together stakeholders from politics, science, the private sector and civil society. People travelled from around the world to be part of this event that aimed to set the agenda for a healthier future by inspiring innovative solutions that can improve health outcomes, for all. CEO Karoline Myklebust Linde took part, together with Dr Robert Moshiro from the Haydom Lutheran Hospital - our partners in the Safer Births Bundle of Care program. The program's approach and the preliminary results, which show impressive reductions in maternal and newborn mortality in Tanzania, sparked enthusiasm and great conversations! 🤝 Thank you to all those we connected with during the summit, who continue to share in our commitment to help save more mothers and newborns, globally. #globalhealth #berlin #worldhealthsummit #maternalcare #maternalhealth #womenshealth #newborncare #neonatology #saferbirths #sbbcprogram

🌍 Good things are happening in Nepal! Under the leadership of the Family Welfare Division with support from UNICEF Nepal and in collaboration with the Simulation Society of Nepal, we’re working to enhance maternal and newborn care across 10 facilities supporting over 30,000 births every year. Earlier this week, an orientation for the program “Strengthening Competency and Quality Improvement in Maternal and Newborn Care” was conducted in the Lumbini province. This event marked the formal beginning of the program's implementation in the province. A similar orientation in the Sudurpaschim province will take place later this week. The program focuses on cost-effective simulation-based training to improve healthcare quality. This collaborative effort marks a significant step forward in improving healthcare in Nepal. 🚀 Learn more 👉 https://lnkd.in/dXX8BMx2

💡 "When women have access to midwives, it saves lives." Professor Jane Sandall, at the launch webinar of the new World Health Organization's "Transitioning to Midwifery Models of Care" Global Position Paper. This important new global reference document clarifies what Midwifery Models of Care is and highlights how scaling this model can contribute to reducing the burden of maternal and neonatal death, which remains too high, globally. Many of our partners have contributed to the development of this paper - and we thank them for the time and thought that has gone into its creation. ➡ You can now read the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/dsAX7JpN #midwifery #midwives #healthforall #globalhealth #maternalcare #newborncare International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) World Health Organization United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Jhpiego UNICEF Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Burnet Institute The International Pediatric Association (IPA)

Simulators Supporting the Training of Midwives in Somaliland 👇 A few weeks ago we received an update from an inspiring midwife, Ayaan Habane, who lives and works in Sweden - but spends at least a month every year in her home-country of Somaliland. Somaliland has one of the highest rates of maternal mortality in the world, so during these stays, Ayaan – and fellow midwives from Sweden and Norway - provide targeted training in the Gabiley region of the country. One of the key areas midwives in Somaliland have wanted to work on is 'team working skills'. So, team scenario training using MamaBirthie and MamaNatalie, to improve communication and decision making in the face of emergencies, has been a key focus. Through this work, which began in 2018, hundreds of women and newborns in Somaliland have benefitted from more confident and skilled midwives on the day of birth. 👏 ➡ If you're on Instagram, you can learn more about the work of Ayaan and her colleagues: https://lnkd.in/dRkiKxiN The distribution of these simulators was possible thanks to the Laerdal Medical Buy One, Gift One program. Ethiopian Midwives Improve Skills and Confidence in Managing Postpartum Hemorrhage (PPH) 🙌 Last week a team of Ethiopian midwives undertook the Bleeding After Birth Course (BABC) as part of a training organized by the Ethiopian Midwivies Association, in partnership with us and the Federal Ministry of Health Ethiopia. The training, which contributed to the midwives' professional development, was a-buzz with motivation and enthusiasm. The team undertook simulation scenarios in a risk-free and non-judgemental environment, building their confidence and competence in preventing, identifying and managing PPH. Participants also undertook the Emergency Newborn Care 1 (ENC1) training, refreshing and refining their skills in caring for a newborn in those vital moments after birth. A big thank you to all the midwives who attended and to our partners who worked to make this possible. 🤝 ➡ These courses and their accompanying materials, can be found at: www.hmbs.org #maternalcare #pph #newborncare #midwives #midwiferyeducation #midwifery #globalhealth #ethiopia
