On June 18, 2024, NORBIT participated in a survey at Qian Dao Lake using the NORBIT Multibeam Sonar WINGHEAD i77h. This compact, ultra-high-resolution curved array broadband multibeam sonar offers tight integration with GNSS/INS (Applanix OceanMaster) and is designed for use in demanding operational environments. This survey focused on the ancient underwater city of Shī Chéng, also known as “Lion City,” which dates back to the Tang Dynasty in 621 AD, making it nearly 1,400 years old. The city, thought to have covered an area equivalent to over 60 football fields, was submerged in 1959 due to the construction of a hydroelectric dam. The high-resolution WINGHEAD i77h sonar captured detailed bathymetry of the city’s structures and the surrounding terrace paddy fields. The WINGHEAD F11 is an ultra-high-resolution forward-looking sonar that provides long-range images across a wide sector with exceptional range resolution. Its curved array receiver ensures both acoustic excellence and hydrodynamic efficiency. Ideal for the most demanding tasks on ROVs and unmanned vehicles, the WINGHEAD F11 sonar excels in search and recovery operations and underwater threat detection, where image quality is crucial. This case study presents the results of data collected in various places and in various ranges, Data was collected using NORBIT’s surface vessels or vessels of opportunity equipped with a standard NORBIT PORTUS pole mount and custom angle adjustable brackets. Various targets were chosen to highlight recognizable objects and features at different ranges.

Introducing NORBIT’s 3-day Bathymetric Multibeam Operators Course (Level 1) during August 27 to 29, 2024 in Jersey City, NJ. This course is designed to teach the setup, validation, and operation of a high-performance NORBIT multibeam sonar system for bathymetric data collection. The system will be mobilized “out of the box” and participants will be guided through the set up on a vessel of opportunity in real- time. The training is classroom based and will include live demonstrations of onsite assets, as well as remote operations of the demonstration vessel by class participants. Upon completion of this class, users will be able to set up a NORBIT sonar system with the highly portable PORTUS pole mounting solution, validate the installation, verify offsets and installation parameters, and collect accurate and repeatable bathymetric survey data. Each participant shall be issued a certificate for NORBIT Bathymetric Multibeam Operators Course (Level 1) upon completion. This event is limited in class size, and a great training opportunity for the greater New York area. Space is not guaranteed without prior registration and payment.
