In an ocean of pessimistic articles about a self-sufficiant European battery industry, it's relieving to read articles like this. Last week, Finansavisen's Kapital published an article where Lars Lysdahl, partner in Rystad Energy, elaborates on reasons to invest in the European battery industry, and specifically in Norway. With cheap and green electricity, this energy-intensive industry is in advantagous to locate in Norway. Lysdahl also points out that batteries' competitiveness is not only based on price, which is the main source of scepticism around European battery industry. He mentions that lower geo-political risk increases the acceptance for stiffer prices, as well as sustainability. Taking a look at the oil-, hydropower- and aluminium industry, being behind the competitors has not been an obstacle for Norwegian production. There are therefore good reasons to believe that this industry, with is exponentially growing demand, has a bright future. Overall, Nordic Batteries are excited to participate in battery market during this rapid transformation, and provide optimism regarding the centralization of the battery production chain. As Truls Johansen in Elinor Batteries says: "It seems absurd to produce much needed batteries for storing renewable energy, but use fossil energy in the production". Factor 47 is operative! Yesterday, the pilot line opened under the name Factor 47. Our CEO Jarle Gjøsæther held a speach to introduce the project , and Morrow's chair of the board, Liv Monica Stubholt, visited for an in-depth product review. It was the leader of Høyre and former prime minister, Erna Solberg, who officially opened Factor 47. In her speach, she emphasized the importance of investing in a new industry, not just oil and gas. "How can we use AI to solve challenges associated with welding of battery celles to battery packs, due to the high requirements regarding process- and quality control?" At NFEA’s “Smart Produksjon 2025”, our battery expert Markus Solberg Wahl will discuss this question and how Nordic Batteries aim to answer it. Wahl is product developer and battery tester at Nordic Batteries, and has Post-doctoral experience from Li-Ion battery testing at NTNU. The event will be held in Trondheim 22nd and 23rd of January. This years main topic is “AI and technology in practice”. Industry in Norway is facing many changes in the coming years, both due to climate policy and technological advancement. Facing these challenges, AI technology and digitalization brings both opportunities and difficulties for industrial companies in Norway. As a non-profit member association, NFEA provides networking, competence development and increased comptetitiveness, within companies that develops, uses og deliveres advanced technical automation solutions.
