We are happy to announce one more project completed: Preparation of Enabling Space Technologies and Building Blocks - Fpga Acceleration for pUsh-Broom sAtellite Imagery (FAUBAI)🌲🛰️ We’ve successfully tackled the challenge of analyzing forest imagery directly on on-board hyperspectral satellites, reducing the need for downlink bandwidth. Achievements: ✅ Adapted and implemented a U-Net model for FPGA-based forest analysis. ✅ Achieved 1.6x real-time performance on PRISMA imagery. ✅ Demonstrator running interactively in Python. Benefits: -Progress towards “instrument always on” operations, maximizing satellite usage. -Advancing near-real-time forest monitoring. LUMIO is set to observe meteoroid impacts on the far side of the Moon, aiming to fill the knowledge gap about meteoroid activity between the Earth and Moon. 🛰️💫 So what's the big deal? S&T Norway is happy to announce the successful conclusion of the REal-Time Maritime Intelligence from Optical Satellite Imagery (ESA IOD REMIS) project in collaboration with VAKE, for the European Space Agency - ESA. Together, we presented a comprehensive recap of the concept, detailing our work process, main results, lessons learned from mistakes, and our current plans moving forward. The REMIS project has shown tremendous promise, and we are eagerly looking ahead to the next phase: an actual in-orbit demonstration. While there’s always room for improvement, our work has proven the concept to be not just viable but highly promising for future space endeavours. 🛰️ A significant leap in Earth Observation! 🚀 Exciting news! The European Space Agency (ESA) is launching the CIMR L2PAD project, a game-changer in Earth observation tech. The primary objective of this project is the development of a Level-2 ground prototype processor for the forthcoming Copernicus Imaging Microwave Radiometer (CIMR) satellite, set for launch in the late 2020s 💡 Highlights -> Objective: Develop a Level-2 ground prototype processor for the upcoming CIMR satellite, enhancing Europe’s Earth observation capabilities. -> Transparency: Emphasises open-source science for ATBDs and software, promoting reproducible research. -> Collaboration: A consortium of 12 partners, including research institutions, universities, and private IT firms, showcases the power of public-private partnerships. S&T will be supporting the project from two avenues. The first will be to update and evolve the CIMR Re-Gridding Toolbox (RGB) to the needs of the L2 users. The RGB is also being developed by our team here in Norway and this part of the project will be developed by our excellent engineer Joseph Heywood! The second is the integration of the L2PAD into the Copernicus Expansion Mission Platform Algorithm Laboratory (CEM-PAL) environment, which will be conducted by the talented Nikhil Ulahannan.
