Sometimes visitors to #ESTEC ask to see our "Zero-G room". Sadly the laws of physics mean we don't have one... 😢 BUT we do have the next best thing... Our 45 sq. m ORBIT facility is the flattest floor in Europe, on which glide air-bearing platforms, like an air hockey table in reverse, producing friction free (but quite loud!) movement that reproduces weightless free-floating effects in 2D instead of 3D. ORBIT was recently used by the COCO Project student team from the University of Southampton to test their innovative satellite control system, a test campaign organised through the ESA Academy Experiments programme: https://lnkd.in/ej3FX5Xc

The latest news and collaboration opportunities from ESA's Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality
Over ons
When the majority of new missions at the European Space Agency (ESA) are envisioned, the technology that will make them possible does not even exist – yet. It is the job of ESA’s Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality (TEC) to identify the required enabling innovations, make them real and bring them up to the needed level of performance and reliability so that the right technology is ready at just the right time.

☄ Announcing Ramses, Europe's future envoy to an asteroid 🛰 In April 2029, the asteroid #Apophis will pass within 32 000 km from Earth’s surface. Visible to the naked eye, the flyby of this 375-meter giant calls for a unique European mission to study an asteroid as its physical characteristics are altered by Earth’s gravity: #RamsesESA. The European Space Agency - ESA’s Space Safety programme has received permission to begin preparatory work for its Rapid Apophis Mission for Space Safety (Ramses). Scientists will learn a lot about an asteroid inner composition and structure, which is critical to improve our ability for #PlanetaryDefence. "The Ramses mission concept reuses much of the technology, expertise and industrial and science communities developed for the Hera mission", explains Paolo Martino, leading ESA's Ramses effort. Coordinated from #ESOC, ESA’s #SpaceSafety programme sees this mission as a unique opportunity for science, planetary defence and public engagement. If Ramses is to rendezvous with asteroid Apophis ahead of its close approach to Earth, it must launch by April 2028. We cannot wait until the next Ministerial Council to secure funding or we would lose the opportunity, thus European Space Agency - ESA has been approved to kick-start mission prep using current resources, thanks to the Space Safety programme board's nod. While the definitive call on fully backing the mission awaits the ESA Ministerial Council Meeting's verdict in November 2025, in the meantime ESA and its Member States show their willingness to become more agile, streamline processes, and shorten unnecessary bureaucracy. We are on the path to a new ESA…and to Apophis. Read more 👉 https://lnkd.in/epytaZUY ESA Operations, Engineering & Space Safety

We have our pictures from Orbit! 🚀 The YPSAT, our Young Professional Satellite made by our ESA Young Professionals, launched aboard the #Ariane6 last night, and we are excited to share the pictures from orbit, alongside the video of the fairing separation of the Ariane 6 🛰️ The #YPSAT mission has finished with taking breathtaking pictures of our blue planet from above, which was only made possible by the unique Wake-Up System created by the young professionals. With teams actively participating in the launch in the Mission Control Room at ESA #ESOC and decoding in the labs of ESA #ESTEC, the pictures are truly out of this world! 🌌✨ Not only did YPSAT record the main milestones of the #Ariane6 maiden flight, thanks to the @OSCAR-QUBE, the mission also succeeded in its scientific goal, capturing the earth's magnetic field throughout the atmosphere. We want to give a huge thank you to our other partners Scanway, EnduroSat, AMSAT-EA, and the many ground stations that supported us through the night 🕺 #ESA #SpaceTeamEurope #Ariane6 #YPSAT

#JuventasMission – preparing for the final delivery 🚀 With just over a month to go the Juventas team has been busy these last few weeks preparing for the final delivery of the spacecraft. This includes a key milestone: the qualification acceptance report. The team has been working closely with European Space Agency - ESA to finalise any last checklist items and close out system end-to-end (E2E) tests for Juventas. These have included a simulated de-saturation of the reaction wheels by the propulsion system as well as a de-tumbling of the spacecraft using the reaction wheels! 🧑🏻🔬 Many more tests are underway as Juventas sprints for the finish line at ESTEC, before it embarks on its final terrestrial journey with mothercraft #HERA and sistercraft #Milani in October. 🌌☄️ #GomSpaceLuxembourg #AsteroidMission #PlanetaryDefence
